bet365 US Darts Masters: Introducing 'Mighty Mike', Michael van Gerwen

We profile the three-time World Championship winner and darts superstar Michael van Gerwen as he looks to win the bet365 US Darts Masters for an incredible sixth time in New York City in June.

How many ranking titles has Michael van Gerwen won?

Van Gerwen is the green winning machine. The Dutchman has won 45 PDC premier titles in his career and that includes lifting the World Championship crown at Alexandra Palace on three occasions.

The first of those came in 2014, when Mighty Mike beat Peter Wright in the final to land his first world title.

Two more successes followed in 2017 and 2019 and Van Gerwen has also won three World Matchplay, three UK Open, three Grand Slam and six World Grand Prix titles in what has been, and still is, an amazing career.

The Dutchman has taken down the Premier League on six separate occasions, and from 2015 to 2018 Mighty Mike appeared almost unbeatable, as his wrapped up tournament win, after tournament win.

There’s an almost inexhaustible list of victories on the World Series, European Tour and in Players Championship events and it’s also worth noting that MVG is a three-time World Cup winner when representing the Netherlands.

What is Michael van Gerwen’s current world ranking?

Mighty Mike is ranked number two in the world, behind current world champion Michael Smith, on the PDC’s two-year Order of Merit system.

It was a slow start to the career of MVG, who was ranked 34 after his first season of competition on tour in 2007, and Mighty Mike had dropped to 40 by the end of the 2011 campaign.

However, a first major victory in the 2012 World Grand Prix proved the spark that would see Van Gerwen go on to climb to number one in the world.

The Dutchman was ranked the world’s best darts player by the end of the 2014 season and that was a honour that stayed with the Dutchman for seven consecutive seasons.

Van Gerwen dropped to number three after the 2021 campaign, but you certainly would back against the deadly Dutchman regaining top-spot in the near future.

How old is Michael van Gerwen?

Van Gerwen is 34 years old and there still looks to be plenty more titles in him.

Mighty Mike was a two-time World Youth Championship finalist in his formative years and in 2014, at the age of 24, van Gerwen became the youngest winner of the PDC World Championship.

Where is Michael van Gerwen from?

Van Gerwen was born in Boxtel, southern Netherlands. Mighty Mike now lives in the small town of Vlijmen in the Dutch province of North Brabant.

What song does Michael van Gerwen walk out to?

Van Gerwen makes his entrance in pumped-up style to Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, following an intro of Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd.

How much prize money has Michael van Gerwen won during his career?

MVG has collected £1,156,000 in prize money over a two-year period in PDC ranking tournaments.

The Dutchman collected a total of £1,100,000 from his three World Championship victories. The lucrative Premier League invitational event has also proved a good earning opportunity for MVG.

Van Gerwen has collected well over £2,000,000 in prize money from an event that he has won on six separate occasions.

What darts does Michael van Gerwen use?

Van Gerwen throws a 21.5g Winmau Exact MVG darts. The Dutchman made the switch to manufacturer Winmau in 2020, and after experimenting with various sets of tungsten, he settled on the match-weighted 21.5g arrows.

What are Michael van Gerwen other career achievements?

Where to start? Mighty Mike is the youngest ever winner of a BDO ranking event, the youngest winner of the formerly top-level Winmau World Masters and he still holds the title of the youngest PDC World Championship winner.

In 2016 MVG set the world record highest televised average of 123.40 in the 2016 Premier League, he threw two nine-dart finishes in one match at the 2017 UK Open qualifiers and he recorded the highest ever three-dart average at the World Championship with a 114.05 in the same year.

In 2019 he became the first player to win 30 European Tour titles and in the same season he broke Phil Taylor’s long-standing record for the most Pro Tour titles with a 71st victory.
