Championship - Football: Best sides to win the Championship title

With Fulham securing promotion back to the Premier League and on their way to winning the Championship title, we look at the best teams to win the division.

Royals top the points tally

When it comes to the amount of points earned in a Championship season, there is no topping the Reading side in the 2005/06 campaign.

After splashing the cash to bring in a host of top attacking players, manager Steve Coppell helped the Royals win the title with a remarkable 106 points.

Standout performers included the likes of Kevin Doyle, Shane Long, Stephen Hunt, Steve Sidwell and record signing Leroy Lita who all played important roles in guiding Reading to the Premier League for the first time in their history.

The good old days at Sunderland

As Sunderland continue to try and battle their way out of League One for yet another season, the Black Cats supporters can look back on the 1998/99 campaign with fond memories.

A team that only managed to concede 28 goals in 46 games that season, manager Peter Reid led Sunderland to the Championship title with 105 points (then a new points tally record).

Experienced forward Niall Quinn played a key role in the squad, as did Kevin Phillips who went on to shine in the Premier League, scoring 30 goals in the top flight the following season.

Sunderland fans will also remember the contributions of the likes of Thomas Sorensen, Michael Bridges and Danny Dichio who all had their part to play.

Hughton guides Magpies to glory

Sunderland's neighbours Newcastle United have also enjoyed a stellar campaign in the Championship when they won the title in the 2009/10 season.

Chris Hughton managed to handle a team full of experienced stars to win the title with 102 points.

Andy Carroll shone that season with 17 goals, as did midfielder Kevin Nolan as the pair showed they were a class above the competition.

Peter Lovenkrands and Shola Ameobi also ended up with double figures in the goalscoring department as Hughton saw his Magpies side breeze back into the Premier League.

Wolves one of the greatest

While they are down the pecking in order in terms of points earned over a Championship season, the Wolverhampton Wanderers side of 2017/18 is regarded as one of the best teams to lift the trophy.

Once again, heavy investment was the key to their success as they brought former Porto boss Nuno Espirito Santo to the English second tier.

Players who are now stars in the Premier League, it's hard to imagine the likes of Ruben Neves and now Liverpool forward Diogo Jota were part of this Championship winning squad.

The Wolves team was ready made for life in the Premier League, such were their individual stars and the quality of their Portuguese manager.

That 2017/18 team was the foundations of the Wolves side that are once again challenging the big boys at the top end of the Premier League table this season.
