And then there were two.... It doesn’t get any bigger than this, with the favorite United States facing host nation France for the gold medal in women’s basketball on Sunday afternoon.
The Americans are seeking a 10th gold medal in this event (no other country owns more than two); France has secured its third medal in the last four Olympics and it is one win away from its first gold.
Let’s take a look at the odds and best bets to be made for Sunday’s showdown between the United States and France.
Team USA extended its Olympic winning streak to 60 games and put itself within one victory of an eighth consecutive gold medal by beating Australia 85-64 in the semifinals. It was a result that sets up the Americans extremely well for Sunday’s championship showdown.
The Aussies were never competitive, so the United States’ best players did not have to put in a significant workload. Breanna Stewart recorded 16 points in 22 minutes, while A’ja Wilson finished with 10 points in 20 minutes.
When this high-powered squad can win by 21 points against a respectable opponent without really putting its foot on the gas, it is a good sign.
Although France cannot be entirely discounted, it will be hard pressed to be competitive on Sunday – even with home-court advantage. The Frenchwomen have been held under the 80-point mark in three of five games this fortnight, which does not bode well for their chances of keeping up, from an offensive standpoint.
Les Bleues scraped past Australia by just seven points in group play and defeated Belgium by only six in the semifinals after trailing by 15 points in the third quarter. A slow start is not a death knell against the Belgians; it would be against the Americans.
The United States has won all five of its games in Paris by at least 13 points. They have not even been required to showcase a maximum effort from start to finish in any contest, but – since a gold medal is at stake – their best effort will be on display regardless of what is on the scoreboard.
The result should be an overwhelming win for the favorites.
An over bet correlates nicely with Team USA covering the spread, because the favorites obviously have to score a sizable chunk of points to cover a big spread. They have been doing just that throughout the tournament.
Head coach Cheryl Reeve’s squad has produced 102 points in its opener against Japan and has not scored fewer than 85 on any occasion.
Meanwhile, perhaps no team in the competition outside of the United States boasts better top talent than France, which is led by Gabby Williams and Marine Johannes.
Williams, who has played five WNBA seasons with Chicago and Seattle, has scored at least 14 points in each of the past four games. Johannes is a streaky three-point shooter who is also a great passer. She averaged double figures in scoring for New York in 2022 while averaging 3.4 assists per contest.
A number of 155.5 is not particularly large, giving bettors all the more reason to hammer the over.
