Team USA blew away the competition to finish as the best side in the Olympic men's basketball group stages, making them the top seed heading into the knockout round where they'll face Brazil.
The draw has been kind to Team USA with world champions Germany, hosts France and rivals Canada all ending up in the other half of the bracket.
This fantastic US side has almost a clear run to the gold medal game, having already beaten their biggest rivals Serbia in the group stage. They open the knockout round as huge favorites to see off a Brazilian side that lacks the star quality to rival them.
The United States didn’t hold back in the last round, topping 100 points in each of their group victories.
With so many stars to choose from, they’ve got no shortage of firepower going forward. Their star-studded roster means there’s little drop-off from their first unit to their second, so Brazil need to be at their best for 48 minutes.
Keeping Team USA at bay has proven difficult, as they finished group play with a +64 points differential. The only thing that really held back their point total in their second and third games was the lack of a real rally from South Sudan and Puerto Rico down the stretch. Serbia kept coming at them, pushing the US to 110 points.
Brazil conceded 78 points to France, 84 to Japan and 86 to Germany, and given the quality at Steve Kerr’s disposal, his team can score 107 points or more.
The top scorers for the US haven’t exactly been consistent, which is not a shock due to the talent on the roster. Kevin Durant couldn’t miss against Serbia, Bam Adebayo led the way against South Sudan and Anthony Edwards was fantastic in their final group game against Puerto Rico.
One man who has flown under the radar through the three games is Devin Booker. The All-Star may be on the same level as Durant in the Phoenix Suns’ pecking order, but internationally he’s far from the main draw.
However, Booker has quickly got to grips with his role on the Olympic team. The shooting guard has put himself in good positions and he’s getting plenty of looks.
With 12, 10 and nine points from his first three games, he’s showing the kind of consistent form which makes him a good bet to reach double-figures.
Yago has made his mark on this tournament and the Crvena zvezda guard will be key for Brazil in this huge game. While the guard was able to sit back a little more in the victory over Japan, he was key in their two earlier contests.
Yago recorded six assists against France while he was stellar against Germany, posting 18 points and eight assists.
The US have plenty of capable defenders and former Toronto Raptor Bruno Caboclo is likely to struggle to repeat his 33-point showing from the win over Japan. They’ll need more guard play to keep this close, so back Brazil to look to Yago time and time again.
Given that, his odds to have at least seven assists hold a lot of appeal.
