Lunar Owls stayed undefeated with two more wins last weekend, while the Phantom is one of four teams to enter this weekend with a 2-4 record.
Napheesa Collier had 26 points and seven rebounds, Allisha Gray had 19 points and Skylar Diggins-Smith tallied 16 points as the Owls held off Laces, 75-73, on Friday.
Collier posted 36 points and 12 rebounds and Gray scored 20 points as Lunar Owls handled Vinyl Monday night, 85-68. Diggins-Smith had 14 points and six assists in the win.
Phantom went 1-1 last weekend with Sabrina Ionescu returning after a two-game absence. She led all scorers with 32 points and added nine rebounds and eight assists as Phantom defeated Rose on Friday, 75-63. Satou Sabally added 13 points and six rebounds.
On Monday, Brittney Griner led the team with 20 points and eight rebounds, but Phantom fell to Mist, 64-61.
Lunar Owls handled Phantom in the teams’ first meeting, 82-58. Collier had a monster effort for the winners, scoring 37 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Sabally led Phantom, who were without Ionescu, with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Lunar Owls star Collier is dominating the league in its early run. She leads everyone with 29.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per contest. The four-time All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist was unstoppable against Phantom on the first go-round.
Collier, Gray, and Diggins-Smith of the Lunar Owls are arguably the best-performing trio in the league.
Gray, a former WNBA Rookie of the Year, is fourth in scoring at 19.2 points per game, while Diggins-Smith, a six-time WNBA All-Star, is going for 15.3 points per game. WNBA veteran Courtney Williams is adding nine points per game.
Meanwhile, Phantom were buoyed by the return of three-time All-Star and 2024 WNBA champion Ionescu. She averaged 22 points in the team’s 1-1 weekend and is right behind Gray and fifth in the league in scoring with 19 points a game. Her 6.3 assists per contest lead the league.
Sabally is eighth in scoring at 17.7 points and is adding six rebounds per game. Griner is going for 15.2 points and 6.2 rebounds a game.
Phantom have lost four games by an average of 17 points. That includes the 24-point pasting by Lunar Owls the last time these two teams met.
Ionescu’s return should aid in that regard, but she has been on the court for the other three losses, including the league’s worst result so far, an 83-48 opening weekend loss to Laces.
Look for Lunar Owls to stay undefeated and cover the spread as 8.5-point favorites.
The only chance Phantom have in this contest is keeping Lunar Owls off the scoreboard as much as possible.
Phantom have only topped 142.5 points combined with their opponents once so far.
Lunar Owls has accomplished that in four of six games to date, but did come just under that total when they met Phantom a couple weeks ago.
It should be close, but look for the teams to post similar totals this time around and total Under 142.5 points.
