Germany and Greece will face off for a place in the last four of the men's basketball tournament at the Olympics in Paris.
We’ve already seen plenty of great action on the hardwood in the group stage of the competition and, as the business end of the tournament gets under way on Tuesday, it’s time to take a look at one of the big quarterfinals between Germany and Greece.
Outside of the United States team consisting of many of the best players from the NBA, one could argue that the German national team has been the second-best side at this tournament.
The Germans have been extremely impressive thus far, dispatching Brazil, Japan and France by an average of nearly 16 points en route to a berth in the quarterfinals.
This German side also gave the United States trouble in the exhibition game they played in the lead-up to this tournament, so their success on the international game’s biggest stage should come as no surprise to those who have been paying attention.
Germany’s offense is a nightmare for opposing defenses, particularly if you are unable to defend their motion around the perimeter, often leading to back cuts and open layups for the likes of Franz and Moritz Wagner.
NBA point guard Dennis Schroder is at the controls of this balanced Germany attack and he’s been excellent in the international basketball setting over the course of his career.
That hasn’t changed during this tournament, as he’s averaged nearly 20 points and nine assists per game in this tournament.
Lastly, Germany has a lethal sharpshooter in Andreas Obst, who has made threes on 12 attempts through the first phase of this competition.
This is a balanced attack that can make life miserable for opposing defenses, as we’ve seen in each of the first three games. Germany often takes a lead and never looks back, and we could see a similar script in this quarterfinal.
On the other side, it hasn’t been the smoothest Olympic games by any means for the Greece national team.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has been as good as advertised in this tournament, averaging 27 points, 7.7 rebounds and nearly four assists.
However, outside of the Greek Freak’s terrific performances, the rest of the offense has not quite showed up. In fact, Greece has yet to score 80 points in any game.
The Greeks fell to Canada to open group play, before following that up with a 84-77 loss to Spain.
And while Greece was able to sneak its way into the quarterfinals by defeating Australia 77-71, that victory came with its fair share of questions as well.
Greece got out to a commanding early lead, but nearly squandered it by scoring just 24 total points in the second half. That kind of offensive effort won’t cut it against a German side that is clicking on all cylinders at the moment.
Given that Greece has struggled all tournament long and Germany looks like a serious medal contender, the only way we can look with our Germany vs. Greece predictions is a wager on Germany to cover the 7.5-point spread and move in to the semifinal.
