At 2-0, both France and Germany have already locked up spots for the Olympics men’s basketball quarterfinal round. But the top of Group B is on the line when the two countries meet Friday.
Germany has posted double-digit victories over both Japan and Brazil while France had to go to overtime to defeat the Japanese after handling Brazil in its opener.
On paper, this is one of the most evenly matched games in the group stage at the Olympics. NBA veterans dot both rosters, and budding superstar Victor Wembanyama could be the difference for the French. However, the Germans have displayed more depth and scoring prowess in its first two games.
Germany has already had six different players score in double figures. Wembanyama leads France at 18.5 points per game, but he will need to get more help to fend off Germany.
Look for the Germans to secure Group B and cover the spread.
This should be a tight contest throughout, and both teams have 6-7 guys that can consistently score. Germany’s inside-out combination of the Wagner brothers and Dennis Schroder will contend with France’s interior power of Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert.
Look for the tight game to produce a higher score, as the two teams should score more than 166.5 points.
Wembanyama had 19 points and nine rebounds in France’s 78-66 victory over Brazil, and followed that up with 18 and 11 in its overtime win over Japan. With Group B on the line, look for Wembanyama to take his inside-out game to another level.
As France tries to keep pace with Germany’s explosive offense, look for Wembanyama to get multiple baskets in transition, as well as numerous opportunities in the paint. This should be his defining game in the group stage. Look for him to score more than 20 points.
The University of Michigan product has been nothing if not consistent. He averaged 19.7 points last season for the Orlando Magic, and is averaging 19.5 points through two games for Germany at the Olympics. He had 22 against Japan and 17 versus Brazil.
Look for Wagner to continue with that consistency against France. Dennis Schroder, who had 20 in the win over the Brazilians, may end up as the team’s highest scorer, but Wagner and his brother, Moritz, will need to play big roles offensively and defensively for Germany.
