Atlanta Braves vs. New York Yankees: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The New York Yankees host the Atlanta Braves in Game 2 of their ongoing series on Saturday with the hosts looking to save face and take the series to Sunday's decider after being thrashed 8-1 in Friday's opener.

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Yankees betting picks and predictions

Atlanta Braves ML (+110)

This series started with a Chris Sale masterclass that led to the Braves easily winning by a score of 8-1. Sale was dominant in five innings while his counterpart, Carlos Rodon, was tagged for seven runs and 11 hits in just 3.2 innings.

For the second game of the series, Charlie Morton will be on the hill for the visitors with Marcus Stroman getting the nod for the home team.

At 40 years old, Morton has been more than just a serviceable arm in the rotation. He owns a 3.91 ERA and is still getting an above-average strikeout rate because of his wicked curveball. The veteran has also been great recently since he has a 2.65 ERA in June and hasn’t allowed a home run yet this month.

Yankee Stadium has been known to be a hitter’s park because of the short distance to the left and right field poles. Marcus Stroman has experienced that first hand since his home and away splits tell quite the story.

In seven starts at home, Stroman is 1-2 with a 4.12 ERA and is allowing an OPS near .800. However, in eight starts on the road, Stroman is 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA. That’s important to consider - especially since he’s facing a Braves lineup that has plenty of pop in it from the leadoff spot to the last hitter.

Plus, the Braves offense has seen a lot of Stroman in their careers which has led to a lot of success. Between Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies, Adam Duvall, Jarred Kelenic and Marcell Ozuna, they are 17-for-46 (.370).

At plus odds, the Braves are worth the risk tonight.

Over 9.0 Total Runs (+100)

Based on the reasoning to take the Braves above, it would be smart to also take the over. I’m expecting the Braves to get to Stroman early and often due to his struggles at home and because of the success the Braves lineup has had against him in their careers.

If the Braves are going to pull off the upset, it likely won’t be in a low scoring affair. Plus, the over has hit in four straight starts for Stroman and in five of his last six outings. High-scoring games have been common for Stroman this season, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see another one tonight.

While I believe Morton is the better pitcher in this matchup, he is still a hittable pitcher with an above-average walk rate. Morton owns a near 10% barrel rate and his fastball is only low 90s so he doesn’t have the same swing and miss stuff he did earlier in his career.

And between Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton in the heart of the New York order, it’s certainly possible for the Yankees to scratch some runs across against Morton. But in the end, the Braves should be able to win this game in a high-scoring game.
