The Minnesota Timberwolves committed to building the roster around Anthony Edwards this offseason, and he'll want to prove the front office right with a big performance in the season-opening game in Los Angeles.
Minny, with something of a new-look roster, opens the 2024/25 campaign on the road to face the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, October 22.
The Timberwolves traded away Karl-Anthony Towns, who played in the Twin Cities for nine years after the franchise drafted him first-overall in 2015, to the New York Knicks. In return, they got a versatile power forward in Julius Randle and a sharp-shooting guard in Donte DiVincenzo.
Randle and DiVincenzo project to complement Edwards better than Towns did. Randle is a better passer than Towns, and DiVincenzo - a 40.1 percent three-point shooter last year - will draw defenders out of the lane to clear space for the star guard.
Last season, Edwards posted career-high averages in points and assists, and he took fewer threes per game (6.7) than he did in each of his three previous NBA seasons.
Edwards also ranked among the top 15 players in drives per game and pull-up shot attempts per game, and the roster moves indicate that T-Wolves head coach Chris Finch will lean into his ball-dominant style even more. Edwards enters the season with the fifth-shortest MVP odds (+1000) as a result.
DiVincenzo ranked second in catch-and-shoot three-point attempts while Randle averaged 5.0 assists and 9.0 potential assists (passes where the recipient takes one dribble or less before shooting; Randle averaged more than Steph Curry and Jrue Holiday), which should see both slot in seamlessly next to Edwards.
Entering his fifth NBA season, 2020 first-overall pick Edwards has a team built to his strengths and will therefore look to build on his performances from 2023/24, when he developed into a superstar. Let's take a look at his player props for Tuesday night's matchup against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.
