Andy Ruiz and Jarrell Miller meet in a heavyweight cross-roads fight on the Crawford vs. Madrimov undercard, and I have a sneaky feeling we’re in for a surprise in Los Angeles.
After skyrocketing to the big time following his stunning TKO7 win over Anthony Joshua in June 2019, Andy Ruiz Jr’s career has been underwhelming to say the least. After surrendering his titles in a rematch to Joshua later that year, we’ve seen Ruiz just twice since; picking up decision wins over Chris Arreola in May 2021 and Luis Ortiz in September 2022. It’s been almost two years since we’ve seen Ruiz and, for a man hardly known for his discipline, that could be crucial this weekend.
In Jarrell Miller, we have exactly the type of fighter that will test Ruiz’s resolve and, if there have been any corners cut in the gym, Miller is very capable of dragging Ruiz into a dog-fight and making things very difficult for him. Despite his loss to Daniel Dubois in December 2023, Miller showed world-class toughness and endurance, pushing the young, hungry Dubois to the limit before succumbing in the final seconds of the tenth round.
If the same Jarrell Miller that fought Daniel Dubois shows up, I think Ruiz could be in for a hard night. If the same Andy Ruiz that fought Anthony Joshua shows up, I think Miller could be in for a hard night. However, I don’t think the latter still exists.
This, for me, is a distance fight. While a short price at -225, l feel both men are very durable and neither man has shown particularly devastating punching power in recent years. I think it’s a fight that could be very messy and scrappy, which will ultimately favor the smash-mouth brawler Miller. Ruiz should dominate the early proceedings with his speed and superior boxing skills, but I feel he’ll be dragged into a fight in the second half and things will be very close down the stretch.
I’m going to go with my gut and say the pressure and physicality of Miller will be enough to get the job done this weekend. Inactivity and motivation are huge concerns surrounding Ruiz and I just feel that Miller has the potential to out-hustle him and win this weekend by Decision/Technical Decision at +450.
