Aljamain Sterling is 24-4 in his professional MMA career. He began his career with a 6-1 amateur record, and he earned his "Funk Master" nickname from his unusual wrestling style.

After turning pro, he won his first eight fights in promotions including Ring of Combat and Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

His 8-0 pro record earned him a shot in UFC, and he beat Cody Gibson via unanimous decision in his first fight for the promotion at UFC 170 in 2014.

Sterling continued his winning streak on UFC Fight Night cards with wins over Hugo Viana via TKO, and Takeya Mizugaki and Johnny Eduardo via submission. He lost his momentum with two straight losses via split decision against Bryan Caraway and Raphael Assuncao.

He got back in the win column with a unanimous decision win over Augusto Mendez in April 2017 to earn a spot on that July's UFC 214 card, where he beat Renan Barao via unanimous decision. He ended 2017 with a loss to Marlon Moraes at a Fight Night event, but that was his last loss for five years.

Sterling rattled off wins over Brett Johns, Cody Stamann, Jimmie Rivera, and Pedro Munhoz in 2018 and 2019, and a Performance of the Night submission win over Cory Sandhagen caught the eye of UFC decision makers including Dana White.

The win over Sandhagen led right to a UFC Bantamweight Championship bout against Petr Yan at UFC 259, which Sterling won via disqualification after an illegal knee strike from Yan. The win meant that Sterling became the first UFC fighter to win a title via disqualification.

Sterling made it his mission to prove the title win wasn't a fluke, and he did just that. He won his rematch against Yan at UFC 273 and then beat TJ Dillashaw and Henry Cejudo to retain his belt.

His title reign came to an end at the hands of Sean O'Malley, who beat him via knockout in the second round of their UFC 292 headlining fight in August 2023.

Sterling bounced back from the loss to O'Malley with a unanimous decision victory over Calvin Kattar at UFC 200 on April 13, 2024.
