Washington Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin leads the NHL with 13 goals through 17 games, and he is just 28 goals away from beating Wayne Gretzky's career record of 894 NHL goals.
At age 39, Ovi has shown he can still score at the same pace as the NHL's best. His 17:49 average ice time is a career-low, but he's scoring at a career-high shooting percentage of 21.7 percent.
As a result, Ovechkin is +100 to break Gretzky's career regular-season goalscoring record in the 2024/25 NHL campaign.
Fans who don't think he'll score 28 more goals in 2024/25 can get him at -130 to not break the record this season.
Ovechkin has spent just over 300 minutes on the ice this season - which is over an hour less than the two men tied with him for the league lead in goals scored, Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers and Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers - but he still ranks 14th league-wide in expected goals with 8.2, per MoneyPuck.
The fact he has out-scored his xG by 4.8 goals indicates his shooting could fall closer to the average, but the nine-time Richard Trophy winner for the NHL top goalscorer hasn't carved out a two-decade NHL career by just being an average shooter.
