It's a new era in Tuscaloosa as Kalen DeBoer has taken over for Nick Saban as Alabama Crimson Tide head football coach, and the team will expect to make the newly expanded College Football Playoff this season.
Alabama had a rough start to the 2023 season, losing to a talented Texas team in Week 2 after which starting QB Jalen Milroe got benched. Milroe earned his starting job back in time to beat then-No. 9 Ole Miss in Week 4, and the Tide did not look back until the CFP.
Bama upset Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, winning 27-24 to seal a Playoff spot off the back of two passing TDs by Milroe.
Milroe returns for 2024, but the Crimson Tide have a new-look roster resulting from players leaving after Saban's retirement combined with players joining to play for DeBoer.
That means the Tide has both lost and gained a ton of top-level talent. While safety Caleb Downs - who led the team in tackles as a freshman - left along with wide receiver Isaiah Bond and highly-touted QB prospect Julian Sayin, the team gained OL Kadyn Proctor, OL Parker Brailsford, and DL LT Overton among many others.
After all that offseason change, it's time to look at the regular season with a list of the important odds for Alabama heading into the 2024 campaign.
Alabama is not among the highest-regarded teams this preseason - many of those teams have total wins lines of 10.5 - but oddsmakers still believe the Crimson Tide will have a good first year under DeBoer. Clemson, Boise State, Kansas State and LSU are some of the teams that also have lines set at 9.5.
The Tide has a tough schedule as they face preseason No. 1 Georgia in Week 4 before a run of games from Week 7 to Week 9 that sees Bama visit preseason No. 15 Tennessee, host preseason No. 11 Missouri, and visit preseason No. 13 LSU.
Alabama has the third shortest odds to win the SEC, trailing only Georgia at +170 and conference newcomers Texas at +350. As mentioned, Bama shocked Georgia in the SEC Championship game last season.
There will be less at stake in the 2024 SEC Championship Game thanks to the expanded playoff, but these teams will want take any chance to assert their dominance regardless of the fact that multiple teams from a conference can qualify for the postseason.
Alabama is even money to make the CFP, which is the eighth-shortest price available. Only Georgia, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and Texas have shorter odds.
Bama will primarily battle with SEC teams in Georgia, Ole Miss and Texas. The main question is how many SEC teams the selection committee will allow to make the first edition of the expanded CFP.
Alabama has the fifth-shortest odds to win the National Championship this season. The Tide fell short at the penultimate hurdle, falling to eventual champions Michigan in the Rose Bowl semifinal.
That surprise trip to the playoff was under Saban, while DeBoer's Washington Huskies lost 34-14 to the Wolverines in the National Championship game. Can DeBoer do one better this season with a different team?
