A closer look at Wolves target Matheus Cunha

Wolves are set to make a move for Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha in an attempt to turn their Premier League season around.

The Molineux side have endured a torrid start to their Premier League campaign, sat rock bottom of the table as the division's lowest scorers.

With new manager Julen Lopetegui installed just prior to the World Cup break, the acquisition of Cunha may be viewed as a means of breathing new life into a blunt-looking Wolves attack.

What nationality is Matheus Cunha?

Cunha is Brazilian, and has represented the national side seven times. He's started three games for the Selecao, but is yet to find the net.

He was prolific for the U23 side, however, scoring 21 goals in 24 games. He was top scorer at the 2019 Toulon Tournament, and his three goals helped his side to a gold medal at the 2022 Olympics.

What type of player is Matheus Cunha?

At 6ft, Cunha would likely operate as something of a focal point for Wolves, being utilised by bringing other players around him into the game.

His goal record is rather modest, averaging roughly 0.3 goals per 90, though he is more of a Roberto Firmino-type forward, and Liverpool were reportedly interested in the Atletico man last January.

Statistically, Cunha ranked amongst the highest centre-forwards in Europe's top five leagues for pressures, tackles and interceptions per 90, though many of his appearances came off the bench last season.

How old is Matheus Cunha?

Cunha turned 23 at the end of May this year.

Who does Matheus Cunha play for?

Cunha plays for Atletico Madrid, having moved from Hertha Berlin at the beginning of last season. He's also spent time with Sion in Switzerland, as well as RB Leipzig.

What position does Matheus Cunha play?

Cunha is a centre forward, but as a versatile player he is also capable of operating out wide or deeper.

How much would Matheus Cunha cost?

Reports suggests Wolves will loan Matheus Cunha until the end of the season, with the deal including an obligation to buy for a fee which could rise to £35m in the summer.
