Former Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will be the next manager of the U.S. men's national team, officially announced Tuesday by the U.S. Soccer Federation.
Pochettino, 52, signed a two-year contract that will carry him through the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Pochettino's hiring marks the biggest in U.S. men's soccer history, as the Argentine is considered one of the top managers in world soccer having been at the helm at some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
It also comes at the most important juncture in U.S. men's soccer history, as the team is just two years out from hosting the World Cup, at which they are +5000 to win.
The U.S. job opened up earlier this summer when Gregg Berhalter was fired following an underwhelming 2024 Copa America in which the Americans were eliminated in the group stage.
Berhalter, who had been USMNT head coach since 2018, was relieved of his duties by the United States Soccer Federation on Wednesday, July 10, nine days after the team was eliminated from the competition.
The U.S. is +5000 to lift the trophy come summer 2026, the 13th-shortest odds in the market. Brazil, France and Spain are currently joint-favorites to win the competition at +600.
The U.S. is above 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia (+6600), 2022 semifinalists Morocco (+10000) and neighbors Mexico (+6600) and Canada (+15000) in the betting, to name a few.
With the tournament on home soil, the U.S. receives automatic qualification into the expanded 48-team field.
