The American League Central may be the toughest division to predict heading into the 2025 MLB regular season.
While one of its teams is a long shot to have any impact on the league this season, the four other teams are all shorter than 3/1 to win the division.
Here, we'll take a look at the odds and break down each team's chances to lead the AL Central by the time the calendar flips to October.
DET Tigers | +225 |
MIN Twins | +225 |
KC Royals | +280 |
CLE Guardians | +290 |
CHI White Sox | +30000 |
The Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins are tied in the preseason odds as the favorites to win the AL Central (+225), and the Kansas City Royals (+280) and Cleveland Guardians (+290) are not far behind.
All four of those teams won at least 82 games in 2024, and the Guardians ended up winning the division by a 6.5-game margin with a 92-69 record.
Detroit is led by reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, and the roster contains a number of young position players who could boost their production this season. That group is headlined by Riley Greene, who had a breakout year en route to All-Star honors in 2024, along with 22-year-old 2B Colt Keith, 24-year-old 1B Spencer Torkelson, and 24-year-old outfielders Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez.
The Twins will hope for better health in 2025. Shortstop Carlos Correa posted a team-high 3.7 WAR in just 86 games, and Byron Buxton finished second with a 3.6 WAR rating in just 102 games. Their pitching staff should be strong with Pablo Lopez, Bailey Ober and Joe Ryan as the top three starters and Jhoan Duran, Cole Sands and Griffin Jax out of the bullpen.
Kansas City is centered around superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who played his way into MVP consideration last season. The pitching staff is good, too, with Seth Lugo and Cole Ragans leading the way. The question is, who will protect Witt in the lineup? Only two other Royals hitters posted a WAR above 2.0 in 2024.
The Guardians finished last season as one of the league's best teams in terms of run prevention, but their run production left a lot to be desired. They traded the team's second-best power hitter from 2024, 1B Josh Naylor, and replaced him with 37-year-old Carlos Santana. But Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan are proven stars, and the young double-play combination of Andres Gimenez and Brayan Rocchio should continue to improve.
The Chicago White Sox, meanwhile, won 41 games in 2024, the fifth-fewest in MLB's modern era. This offseason, they traded their best player, Garrett Crochet, and they only had one position player to post a WAR rating over 1.0 last season. As a result, they are distant outsiders at +30000 to win the AL Central.
