The 2025 Masters Tournament gets underway from Augusta National Golf Club on Thursday, April 10.
Here, we look at the players with the shortest odds to lead after Thursday’s opening round.
In 2024, Bryson DeChambeau shot an opening-round 65 to lead the field heading into Friday, but eventually finished T6 as Scottie Scheffler went on to win his second Masters.
The last player to lead after the first round and go on to win the Masters was Dustin Johnson in 2020.
Scottie Scheffler | +1200 |
Rory McIlroy | +1400 |
Collin Morikawa | +2200 |
Jon Rahm | +2500 |
Bryson DeChambeau | +2500 |
Ludvig Aberg | +2800 |
Xander Schauffele | +3300 |
Justin Thomas | +3300 |
Hideki Matsuyama | +3300 |
Joaquin Niemann | +3500 |
As expected, tournament favorite and defending champion Scottie Scheffler (+1200) is favored to lead after the opening round at Augusta.
Scheffler did not lead after the first round at either of his Masters victories in 2022 and 2024, and has not led after the first round in any of his 19 major starts dating back to the 2019 U.S. Open. The world No. 1 ranks ninth on the PGA Tour in first round scoring average in 2025, averaging 68.83.
Rory McIlroy, seeking his first major since 2014 and a career grand slam, is second-favorite to lead after round one at +1400. The Northern Irishman is accustomed to starting strong, and has led or been tied for the lead after 18 in two of the last 11 majors.
Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau are joint-third to lead after the first round at +2200, with Ludvig Aberg, playing in his second Masters after a second place finish in his debut in 2024, close behind at +2500.
DeChambeau, the 2024 U.S. Open champion, held the outright lead after 18 at last year’s Masters, as well as at the 2023 PGA Championship.
Xander Schauffele, who won two majors in 2024, and fellow American Justin Thomas are +3000 in the market. Schauffele is the most recent player to lead after the first round at a major and go on to win it, which he did at the 2024 PGA Championship.
LIV golfer Joaquin Niemann and 2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama are each +3300, with a big group – Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Cantlay, Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry, Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland – next up at +3500.
