A rematch of the 2023 WNBA Finals is on in the 2024 semifinals as A'ja Wilson leads the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces against Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty.
The Aces beat the Seattle Storm in two games in the first round, while the Liberty beat the Atlanta Dream in two games.
The Liberty - who lost to Vegas in last year's Finals - enter as slight favorites. New York went a league-best 32-8 this season and went 3-0 against the Aces; Vegas went 27-13 for the second-best record this season.
In the season series, New York won the first game 90-82 in Vegas, the second 79-67 in Vegas, and the third 75-71 at home.
Aces forward Wilson was recently named WNBA MVP for the third time after one of the greatest individual campaigns in league history.
The 6-foot-4 superstar led the league with 26.9 points per game, 2.6 blocks per game, a 5.3 turnover percentage, a 32.2 usage percentage, a 31.8 defensive rebounding percentage, and 232 free throws made. She ranked in the top five with 11.9 rebounds per game, 1.8 steals per game and a 62.7 true shooting percentage.
Stewart, the Liberty's two-time league MVP, finished fourth with 20.4 points per game, eighth in rebounds with 8.5 per game, eighth in steals with 1.7 per game, and eighth in blocks with 1.3 per game.
Aside from the clash between Wilson and Stewart, these teams have lots of depth.
Vegas, the two-time reigning champions who are looking to be the first team to win three in a row since the now-defunct Houston Comets in 1999, have Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum, who are each multi-time All-Stars.
The Liberty have Sabrina Ionescu, Betnijah Laney, and 2021 league MVP Jonquel Jones in addition to Stewart.
In terms of play style, Vegas attempts the third-most threes while shooting over 51 percent inside the arc, showing that they like to spread the floor to create easy looks in the paint. They also turned the ball over the fewest times per game, finished the regular season second in blocked shots, and scored the most points in the league this year.
New York also shoots plenty of threes - they led the league in attempts and makes per game - and they led the league in two-point field goal percentage. They scored the second-most points per game, dished out the second-most assists, and committed the fewest number of fouls on average.
These teams are relatively similar, they both have hugely talented rosters, and they know each other well from past playoff series. These two high-scoring squads should make for a compelling best-of-five series.
