Ahead of the 2024 NFL Season, three AFC East teams are neck-and-neck in the odds to win the division.
The two favorites ended the 2023 campaign with identical 11-6 records, while the third-favorite will have its four-time MVP quarterback healthy under center.
BUF Bills | +170 |
NY Jets | +180 |
MIA Dolphins | +200 |
NE Patriots | +2800 |
Trading away top wide receiver Stefon Diggs and losing secondary wideout Gabe Davis in free agency means the Buffalo Bills offense will have to adjust, but with Josh Allen under center, the Bills will always have a shot at winning the division.
Drafting Keon Coleman gives Allen a high-potential target alongside Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir and tight end Dalton Kincaid. Allen has a high-risk, high-reward style of play that led to a 29-18 TD-INT ratio last year, so his coaching staff will try to help him lessen the turnovers.
The defense will continue to be strong, especially with linebacker Matt Milano healthy. That said, safety Jordan Poyer is a big loss, especially with him going to the division rival Miami Dolphins.
After Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending torn Achilles during his first drive of the 2023 season, the rest of the campaign felt like a waiting game as the New York Jets did not make any moves to improve the QB situation. Instead, fans watched Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian guide the team to a 7-10 record.
The Jets did not make many high-profile offseason moves, but they improved the offensive line by signing longtime Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith and by drafting Olumuyiwa Fashanu from Penn State.
The main hope for head coach Robert Salah and the rest of the Jets' higher-ups is that Rodgers stays healthy. If he doesn't, their divisional odds will lengthen greatly and the team will have some decisions to make as to the franchise's long-term future at QB.
The Miami Dolphins scored the second-most points in the NFL last season, including a 70-point performance in Week 3 of the 2023 season against the Denver Broncos. Their high-powered offense stayed intact over the offseason, but the team made some defensive changes.
First, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio left for Philadelphia and the Dolphins replaced him with Anthony Weaver, who was the Houston Texans' defensive coordinator for one year in 2020 and has otherwise mainly worked as a defensive line coach.
Defensive linemen Christian Wilkins and Emmanuel Ogbah are no longer on the team, and the same goes for linebackers Andrew Van Ginkel and Jerome Baker and cornerback Xavien Howard. Miami needs new additions like first-round pick Chop Robinson and safety Jordan Poyer need to adjust quickly in order to not lose ground on the other competitive AFC East teams.
No team has odds longer to win their division than the New England Patriots at +2800. They had an above-average defense in 2023 but a nearly unwatchable offense that scored the second-fewest points in the league with 13.9 per game, and they failed to score more than 10 points in six games.
New England drafted Drake Maye with the third pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but experts think the Pats will keep him on the bench behind Jacoby Brissett this season. The Patriots offensive line allowed the ninth-most sacks last year, and they didn't add any needle-moving WRs who would help whoever is under center get the ball out faster.
Under first-year head coach and Pats legend Jerod Mayo, the 2024 season is expected to be one that focuses on development as the franchise moves out of the Bill Belichick era.
