2024 NBA Draft: Which team will pick Bronny James?

Bronny James has drawn headlines for years as the son of LeBron James, and he has declared for the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his college basketball eligibility.

James made his college basketball debut for the USC Trojans nine games after the beginning of the season due to suffering cardiac arrest the July before his freshman season.

As a result, the former four-star recruit started his college career on a minutes restriction but never grew into a starting role for an extended period of time. He started in six of the 25 games he played for USC, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

James' career high in minutes played was 30 in a loss to Arizona in January. He had three games with 10 points or more, scoring 15 against Oregon State, 10 against California, and 11 against Arizona.

Given his struggles in college basketball and the amount of development needed until he can crack an NBA rotation, the team that selects Bronny James will likely have the ulterior motive of wanting to sign LeBron James.

James has the eighth-shortest odds to be selected with the first pick in the draft at +3300.

Here, we take a look at where the USC guard could begin his NBA career.

LeBron James has spoken about his desire to play with his son, and while he later walked that back and said he wants Bronny to have his own career, it's not a stretch to think that both LeBron and Bronny will play for the same team if Bronny decides to go pro.

LeBron can opt out of his current contract with the Los Angeles Lakers at the end of the season, and drafting Bronny could be one way the Lakers try to keep him in purple and gold.

Philadelphia 76ers +700

The Philadelphia 76ers have been searching for a superstar to pair with Joel Embiid for over a half-decade, and general manager Darryl Morey could draft Bronny James to try and get his dad to Philadelphia.

In recent years, the Sixers do not have a good record when it comes to player development with the exception of guard Tyrese Maxey. That wouldn't bode well for Bronny, but the presence of Embiid and Maxey could make Philly an attractive destination for LeBron.

Phoenix Suns +800

The Phoenix Suns have an expensive roster with just about no cap room remaining. Coming off a disappointing season and a first-round playoff loss, the team needs to maximize the value it gets out of its one draft pick, which is 22nd overall.

It's hard to see a route that would allow Phoenix to sign LeBron James, which is the main reason any team would draft his son in the first round. But if any team owner is adventurous enough - and financially generous enough - to try, it's Phoenix's Mat Ishbia.

Cleveland Cavaliers +900

Bronny James was born in Akron, Ohio and is the son of the Kid From Akron, so the Cavaliers could attempt to bring both LeBron and Bronny home.

Bronny was born right after his dad's rookie season, so some of his earliest memories may be of watching his dad play basketball in his hometown. But the question is whether the Cavs think it would be wise to go all-in on bringing the James family back to Ohio.

Utah Jazz +1000

The Utah Jazz have three picks in the 2024 draft, and they could target Bronny James with their 29th-overall or 32nd-overall selections. Utah was 28th in payroll in the 2023/24 season, so they can afford a top-level free agent like Bronny's dad.

The biggest question is if LeBron would want to play for the Jazz. It's unlikely that he would, considering the two teams he has played for outside of his hometown are located in the sunny cities of Miami and Los Angeles. Still, the Jazz can dream, and it's possible they like Bronny as a prospect even without his dad joining the team as well.
