The 2024 MLB World Series is set, and it will feature plenty of star power as the New York Yankees take on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
New York beat the Kansas City Royals in four games in the ALDS before taking down the Cleveland Guardians in five games in the ALCS. The Yankees have by far the most World Series titles with 27, but haven't won it since 2009.
The Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres in five games in the NLDS, then beat the New York Mets in six games in the NLCS to advance to the World Series. LA is sixth in MLB history with seven World Series titles dating back to the franchise's time in Brooklyn, and they last won it in 2020.
LA enters the 2024 World Series as -125 favorites, with the Yankees being +105 underdogs.
In the 2024 regular season, the Yankees were powered by the duo of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto at the plate. While Soto crushed the ball in the NLCS, Judge mostly struggled yet still had big moments including the game-sealing three-run home run in Game 2.
While Judge batted just .167 with a .761 OPS, other players stepped up. Giancarlo Stanton slugged four home runs in the five ALCS games for a 1.222 OPS to win the series MVP Award, and Anthony Volpe and Gleyber Torres each scored five runs and had OPS over .800.
For the Dodgers, two of the big three led the way at the plate and four players had an OPS over 1.000. Mookie Betts had two home runs and nine RBI for a 1.182 OPS and Shohei Ohtani had two home runs and six RBI for a 1.185 OPS while the third superstar, Freddie Freeman, struggled though an ankle injury and saw his production drop.
But it was Tommy Edman, the utility player acquired at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals, who won NLCS MVP for the Dodgers.
Edman had 11 hits, three doubles, a home run and 11 RBI for a 1.022 OPS, but more important was the timing of those hits. He doubled in the first inning of Game 6 to give LA the lead, and the team didn't look back in part because Edman hit a third-inning two-run homer to give his team insurance.
Both teams saw mixed performances from their pitching staffs in the LCS. LA shut out the Mets twice but also lost games in which they gave up seven and 12 runs, while the Yankees fared only slightly better on the mound.
Jack Flaherty pitched a seven-inning gem in the Dodgers' 9-0 Game 1 win before he got crushed for eight runs in three innings in the 12-6 loss in Game 5. Walker Buehler pitched out of some jams en route to a Game 3 shutout win, and Ben Casparius, Anthony Banda and Blake Treinen were effective out of LA's bullpen.
Carlos Rodon gave up one run in six innings in the Yankees' Game 1 win, and he was also effective in the series-clinching Game 5 win as he gave up two runs in 4.2 innings. His teammates Tim Hill, Tommy Kahnle, Mark Leiter Jr. and Luis Gil also mostly pitched well.
Let's take a look at the odds for the 2024 World Series clash between two of baseball's most storied franchises.
