2024 Leagues Cup: Picks, Predictions and Odds

The 2024 Leagues Cup gets underway this weekend, with both MLS and Liga MX taking a month-long break to accommodate it. 

It’s the second season in which all 47 teams from MLS and Liga MX are competing for the tournament.

Lionel Messi led Inter Miami to the trophy shortly after arriving in the US last year and his side are strong contenders after a much-improved showing in MLS this term.

Mexican sides won the first two editions of the Leagues Cup and Club America start as the favourites this summer. The Mexican champions have a bye into the knockout round, but there are plenty of contenders capable of stopping them.

Los Angeles FC to win the Leagues Cup (+1200)

This year has been something of a return to form for Los Angeles, after some big squad turnover in the offseason. They were on course for an incredible campaign a year ago, but they fell away in the summer while on course for a huge haul of trophies.

LAFC had a shaky start to the 2024 season, losing three of their first six MLS games.

However, they’ve lost only twice in the league in the 18 matches since, moving into second in the Western Conference. A 2-1 victory at city rivals and Conference leaders LA Galaxy earlier this month was a real signal of intent.

Adding French World Cup winner Olivier Giroud adds depth to their side, providing support for main man Denis Bouanga.

LAFC won the MLS Cup as recently as 2022 and they were runners-up last year after winning the Western Conference. With the team in stellar form heading into the Leagues Cup, they’re a great bet to win it.

Denis Bouanga to be top goalscorer (+1000)

Bouanaga’s chances of finishing as top scorer in the Leagues Cup last year were hit by LAFC’s bye into the knockout stages. The Gabon forward missed the opening stage but he quickly made his mark.

Bouanga scored six goals across just three games in LAFC’s run to the quarter-finals. That impressive return saw him finish third in the scoring charts, behind Messi and Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who both raced ahead of him in the group stage.

While LAFC have a longer path to glory starting in the group stage, that boosts Bouanga’s top scorer hopes. The Western Conference outfit face Vancouver Whitecaps and Tijuana in their pool, where they are the -225 favorite to finish top.

LAFC should have little trouble early on and their path for a deep run in the competition looks good. Those early games offer Bouanga a chance to rack up some goals, making him the standout in the top scorer betting.

Monterrey to win West Group 1 (+100)

Monterrey had an impressive run at the 2023 edition, finishing fourth overall. They comfortably won their group against Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders and the Liga MX side are good value to do so again.

Monterrey had the second-best record across Liga MX’s 2024/25 campaign and they’ve made a bright start to the new season. With three wins from four, they sit fourth going into the month-long break.

This time around Monterrey meet UNAM and Austin FC. Their compatriots look like the biggest threat, with Austin winning just eight of their first 25 matches in MLS this term.

UNAM have made a strong start, but Monterrey were far stronger than them last term and at +100, they’re a good bet to top this group.

Toronto FC to win East Group 6 (+225)

Toronto FC are considered underdogs in their pool, having been ranked as the last seed in the draw after a dire 2023 season. Things had improved under John Herdman, until a rotten run of form saw them slide down the Eastern Conference standings.

That leaves Toronto as outsiders against Pachuca and the New York Red Bulls, but they could put up a fight.

Top seeds Pachuca have won once in their opening four games in the league this term, while they lost their first game in last season’s Leagues Cup. After a bye to the knockout round, they lost at the first hurdle.

Toronto have won two of their last three games to pick up their form. While they are an up and down team, their upturn in form has come at the perfect time for a strong Leagues Cup showing.
