Australian Football: Zadkovich frustrated as Glory lose late

Perth Glory interim boss Ruben Zadkovich admitted his frustration and disappointment as his reign began with a last-gasp 2-1 defeat away at Wellington Phoenix on Saturday.

Glory are on course to finish bottom of the A-League and they have a huge job on their hands to avoid the wooden spoon in the 2021/22 campaign.

Late heartbreak

Zadkovich was taking charge for the first time after replacing Richard Garcia who was sacked after last week’s 4-1 home defeat against Brisbane Roar.

It looked as though Glory would pick up a point with 10 men after Osama Malik was sent off in the 52nd minute but the home side struck deep into stoppage time to take all three points.

It was a real hammer blow for Glory who are in need of some luck, but Zadkovich says it is a sign of the times. Malik was sent off for a challenge on Ben Waine but the Glory coach felt even that was harsh on his midfielder.

Frustrating times

"It's frustrating and it's gutting for the boys," said Zadkovich. "The red card was a little bit deflating. Our first half was really flat and I think that's a snapshot of where we are.

"I haven't seen the replay (of the send-off) but I thought it was a clash of heels more than anything."

Glory were poor in the first half and fell behind in the 36th minute when Nix striker Waine smashed a volley past goalkeeper Liam Reddy.

Nick Fitzgerald got Glory back level straight after the break but the dismissal of Malik stopped them in their tracks and Wellington always looked like the side most likely to win.
