Australian Football: Yorke named All-Stars coach

Former Sydney FC striker Dwight Yorke has been named as the A-League All-Stars coach for the clash against European giants Barcelona next month.

Yorke made his name as a player with both Manchester United and Aston Villa but he has fond memories of the A-League following his spell with Sydney FC.

Perth Glory link

Yorke is now keen to move in to coaching after earning his UEFA Pro Licence coaching badges and this could be the first step for him.

The former striker has also been linked with the vacant managerial post at Perth Glory. Ruben Zadkovich is currently in temporary charge but has yet to be confirmed as the permanent successor to Richard Garcia.

For now though Yorke is just excited to be handed the opportunity with the All-Stars.

“I loved playing in the A-League at its inception and I cannot wait to be back in front of the fans in Sydney,” the 50-year-old said. “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of the A-League’s best men’s talent against one of the world’s biggest clubs and it is an honour to be welcomed back to Australia for this role.”

Perfect choice

The game will take place at Accor Stadium in Sydney on 25th May and Australian Professional Leagues chief executive Danny Townsend says Yorke is the ideal person for the role.

“Dwight is a former player with an incredible footballing pedigree and first-hand experience of playing Australian football,”
Townsend said. “The All Stars are back for the first time since 2014 and we are going to put on the best possible show for fans in Sydney.”
