Australian Football: Western book grand final spot

Western United are through to the A-League grand final following a 4-1 victory over Melbourne Victory on Saturday evening.

Western are priced at 13/8 to now go on and win the grand final in what would be a remarkable achievement in coach John Aloisi’s first season in charge.

Still growing

Western are in just their third season in the A-League and after missing out on finals last season, Aloisi was brought in to replace Mark Rudan as coach and has gone on to work miracles.

They are still a work in progress but Aloisi says they are definitely on the right path.

Aloisi backs Western to go through

"There's been a lot of people putting down the club and some things I understand, because we haven't got a stadium and we're still building our supporter base," Aloisi said. "We're on the journey but to get there so quickly for the club is huge because that helps the supporter base grow."

Trailing 1-0 from the semi-final first leg Western came roaring back thanks to a brace from Aleksandar Prijovic while Dylan Wenzel-Halls and Lachie Wells grabbed the other two.

Victory stopped in their tracks

It has been a remarkable run for Victory who picked up the wooden spoon last season. But they paid the price for not taking their chances.

"We had a lot of possession in both games and in the end maybe we didn't capitalise on our half chances well enough. We didn't turn them into good chances," Victory coach Tony Popovic said.

"Prijovic had two attempts and scored both so that's quality play in a big game and you need that."
