Serie A weekend preview: Can sorry Salernitana put brakes on Napoli?

Runaway Serie A leaders Napoli will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing Coppa Italia exit by easing to victory at last weekend's whipping boys, Salernitana.

Napoli are 3/10 to win the title for the first time since Diego Maradona's heyday after last week's 5-1 romp against Juventus saw them move nine points clear as we approach the halfway point of the season.

Nicola must fear worst after shock recall

Salernitana boss Davide Nicola must be a glutton for punishment given that the visit from imperious Napoli was a game he could have been spared.

Nicola was sacked immediately after last weekend's 8-2 hammering at Atalanta yet 48 hours, and after the club's board couldn't find anyone to replace him, he was reinstalled. Just in time to take on Napoli fresh from walloping Juventus 5-1.

"Let's start again," implored Nicola, whose side have slumped from ninth to 16th after going six without a win.

They haven't kept a clean sheet since October, hardly a stat that will inspire confidence going into this game.

Napoli, we thought, could do no wrong, though Luciano Spalletti's decision to change 10 players for their Coppa clash with Cremonese on Tuesday backfired, as they bowed out on penalties.

At 2/7 for this tussle few will expect another setback and given Salernitana's miserable defensive record and last week's battering, Napoli and over 3.5 goals at 7/4 could be a popular bet.

Rivals Juve and Atalanta clash in Turin in a fixture where the tables have been turned over the past couple of seasons.

A rivalry which Juve used to dominate, since 2020 they have played five times in Serie A resulting in three draws and two Atalanta wins, both 1-0, which is a 9/1 chance.

And Atalanta will be confident. They went into the World Cup break in poor form but have taken seven points from a possible nine since the resumption, culminating in last weekend's extraordinary 8-2 demolition of Salernitana, with former Everton youngster Ademola Lookman making it nine for the season with a brace.

He's 9/2 to score at any time at Juve. Juventus had won eight straight in the league before last Friday's humiliation in Naples and Massimiliano Allegri will be hoping that the likes of Juan Cuadrado and Dusan Vlahovic could be available for a match which is critical in the chase for Champions League spots, with just four points separating AC Milan in second from Roma in seventh.

Cremonese rolled the dice last week and new boss Davide Ballardini could not have wished for a better start.

Three days after Massimiliano Alvino was fired when Serie A's bottom club extended their winless run to 18 matches by losing 3-2 at home to Spezia, Ballardini's first task couldn't have been a more thankless one – Napoli away in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia.

Incredibly (even allowing for wholesale changes by Luciano Spalletti) Cremonese won on penalties, giving fans of La Cremo hope that they can now start winning some league games.

Starting at Bologna where they are a 16/5 shot. And while Bologna did come from behind to win 2-1 at Udinese last weekend, they are still blighted by injuries with Marko Arnautovic heading a long list of unavailable stars.

History not on Empoli's side as they head for Inter

Spezia and Roma – who meet on Sunday – have played each other four times in Italy's top flight, with three wins for the Romans and a draw.

Jose Mourinho's men are 4/5 to extend that dominance with another three points.

But when it comes to head-to-head supremacy there isn't a match this weekend that has been quite as one-sided as Inter Milan against Empoli.

Of the last 14 showdowns between these teams, Inter have prevailed in 13 of them with the other ending in a draw. Empoli continue to look solid and organised yet those stats make them hard to fancy even at 17/2.
