Super League XXVIII week five preview: Leeds Rhinos can continue charge up the table

After back-to-back wins over St Helens and Wakefield Trinity, Leeds Rhinos will look to continue their charge up the Super League standings when they travel to Castleford Tigers on Thursday night.

This West Yorkshire derby kick-starts another exciting week of action from the competition, with all 12 teams jostling for position in this early stage of the season.

It has been a tough start to the season for Castleford and things are not going to get any easier for them as they host Leeds at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Four defeats from four going into the game, Cas are still relying on interim boss Andy Last following the departure of head coach Lee Radford.

Leeds also started the season poorly but have made visible progress in the last two weeks with wins over both St Helens and Wakefield.

The Rhinos have had some big defeats to Castleford in recent years but they could put on a big score themselves against the Tigers this week.

With that in mind, Leeds are 10/11 to come out on top with a -6 Handicap.

Huddersfield Giants and Wigan Warriors find themselves in third and fourth place in the table going into this week’s Super League fixtures.

The Giants will be on a high after a 36-6 win over Castleford last time out, while Wigan will be looking to bounce back after an 18-10 defeat on home soil at the hands of the Catalans Dragons.

Huddersfield were one of the surprise packages in Super League last season and they could well be in the play-off mix again this year.

This might well be a tight encounter at the John Smith’s Stadium, with Huddersfield at 1/1 to edge it on home soil.

Saints eyeing response

St Helens’ heroic efforts to win the World Club Challenge in Australia appear to have taken their toll on Paul Wellens' side.

Back-to-back defeats to Leeds and Leigh Leopards have seen Saints drop off the pace but they will be determined to get back to winning ways when Hull FC come to town on Friday night.

Saints are worth considering at 5/6 to fall on the right side of the -14 Handicap, against a Hull FC side that suffered a 60-14 defeat at home against Salford Red Devils last time out.

Warrington Wolves are the early pace-setters in the Super League and will be looking to make it five wins from five when they host Leigh on Friday.

Having endured a tough first campaign with the Wire last year, head coach Daryl Powell has enjoyed a strong start to 2023.

While Leigh have shown they are ready to compete at this level, a win at Warrington might be a bridge too far for the Leopards.

Matching Warrington’s record at the start of the season, Catalans are a team that will also have ambitions of Grand Final glory this year.

Winning at Wigan will have given the Dragons an added confidence boost and they could be set to put a big score on Hull KR this weekend.

Catalans are available at 10/11 to win with a -14 Handicap in Perpignan.

It already looks like being a long season ahead for Wakefield, as Trinity prepare to travel across the Pennines to face Salford on Sunday.

Averaging just six points a game, Wakefield have looked blunt in attack and this could be another high-scoring defeat at a Salford side that have amassed 110 points in four outings.

Salford with a -16 Handicap are on offer at 10/11.
