Australian Football: Toughest campaign yet says Corica

Sydney FC boss Steve Corica says the 2021/22 A-League campaign has been the toughest in 17 years as his side battle for silverware on two fronts.

The Sky Blues are priced at 14/1 to win the A-League grand final this season but they are also chasing glory in the Asian Champions League.

Hectic schedule

It has been a tough season for every side in the A-League and Corica says he has not experienced anything like it before.

Sydney now face the task of playing 13 games in just 41 days and Corica admits it is a strain on his players, even though they love playing football.

Corica’s men are back in action when they face Macarthur on Wednesday night before another derby against Western Sydney this weekend, followed by a trip to Melbourne City.

They also have to factor in six Asian Champions League group fixtures down the line and Corica says it is full on for everyone involved.

Three games a week

"There's been no other season like this one," Corica told reporters ahead of the Macarthur clash. "You're playing every three or four days and it does take a toll on the players. They do say they love playing the game but it's tough for them as well.

"There's not much training in between. It's about recovering and getting them right for the next game. It's definitely the hardest season by far, probably in the A-League, that I've been in for 17 years."
