New Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith is a firm believer in Davis Mills and expects to see the quarterback make a big improvement from year one to two.
Mills displayed typical rookie growing pains in 2021 before showcasing a vast improvement late in the season when the Texans, who are 20/23 to post more than 4.5 regular season wins, won two of their last four games and ran the AFC South champion Tennessee Titans close in Week 18.
Upgrade for Smith
Over the Texans' final five games, the former Stanford University QB completed 68.4 per-cent of his passes for 251.6 yards per game with a touchdown to interception ratio of nine to two and a 102.4 passer rating.
Former Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Smith was handed the reins at NRG Stadium less than one year after coming in as defensive coordinator as changes were being made at the quarterback position.

Belief in Mills
The Deshaun Watson trade and Tyrod Taylor signing a two-year deal with the New York Giants ensure Mills is the number one option for the Texans going forward with the whole franchise pinning their hopes on the second-year QB to continue his development.
"If you look at all of my comments about Davis, I am a believer in him and what he's going to do," Smith said on Monday, via houstontexans.com
"If you just go back and look at the plays that he made, throwing the ball downfield last year, so many good things that he did, and that's as a rookie.
"The improvement that you see from Year 1 to Year 2 is normally a big improvement, and that's what we're gonna get from him."
