Australian Football: Talay salutes huge Nix win

Wellington Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay saluted his players for picking up a massive three points as they edged past Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0.

The Nix are priced at 1/6 to finish in the top six of the A-League and the three points helped them jump up to fourth place on the ladder.

Waine the hero

Young striker Ben Waine was the hero for Wellington when grabbing the only goal of the game to see off the visitors.

Following a hugely disappointing 4-0 home defeat against Central Coast Mariners last week the Nix were badly in need of a boost and that is exactly what they got.

They are now four points clear of seventh-placed Macarthur and also have a game in hand so only a disaster will prevent them from staying in the six.

“This is a big boost for us into making the finals series,” Talay told reporters after the game. “For us the three points was very important against Western Sydney, with a couple of results that happened in the last few games.

“We’ve still got three games to go where we need to pick up points, but this was a massive game for us today.”

Solid performance

Western Sydney pushed forward looking for an equaliser but Wellington held firm and Talay was proud of the way his players performed.

“That’s part of the game. Sometimes the opponent will have the ball and we need to defend, and I think the boys did it well,” Talay added.

“We’ve got an exceptional group. A group with a lot of resilience. We have a purpose. We know what we want to achieve, and the boys put out a good fight today.”
