Swansea v Rotherham preview: Goals the key in Swansea

Swansea have had a stop-start season in the Championship so far but will be hoping to return to winning ways against relegation-threatened Rotherham.

A playoff place looks beyond the mid-table Swans but they are also too good to go down, something that cannot be said for Millers who are only five points clear of the relegation zone.

Rotherham claimed a much-needed 2-1 win at home to Sunderland on Tuesday, which ended a five-game winless run, but they have had less luck on their travels.

The Yorkshire-based visitors have won only one of their last 11 on the road, whereas Swansea have won seven of their 16 home league outings this term.

Having suffered back-to-back defeats to Blackburn and Stoke, the hosts are 11/20 to get back on the winning trail, while Rotherham are 11/2 to pile more misery on the Welsh outfit.

A draw is a 14/5 chance and their meeting earlier in the season finished 1-1 at the New York Stadium.

Pass masters Swansea should have Millers measure

Russell Martin has called for patience from the Swansea supporters after their recent poor run of form which has seen them lose four of their last five matches.

The Swans are renowned for their possession-based approach but their good football hasn't always been backed up by the results.

However, they have won seven times from 16 games on home turf and that included a memorable 4-0 win over Watford at the end of December.

And Rotherham's struggles away from home makes this an excellent opportunity for Martin to relieve some pressure from the home fans.

Goals have been in high demand in Swansea's home league games this term - there have been 50 goals scored in their 16 matches at their Welsh base - and there is every chance this clash could follow suit.

There have been three or more goals in nine of Swansea's last 11 Championship clashes on their own patch and odds of 10/11 about a repeat make plenty of appeal.

But with the Millers having taken just 13 points from their 17 away games and leaking 25 goals during that period, backing the Swans to win in a high-scoring game looks better value.

The Swans have kept only one clean sheet in 11 league games, which offers hope for Rotherham, but the visitors have won only one of their last 11 on the road.

Martin's men have scored two or more in eight of their last 11 home games and the 6/4 about them winning in a game featuring at least three goals is well worth considering.

The hosts are 8/11 to score at least twice, which could also be a play for those less convinced due to their poor defensive record.

Joel Piroe is Swansea's leading scorer with 12 goals in 32 appearances and he will be hoping to end a four-game goal drought. The Dutch forward is 4/1 to open the scoring and 6/4 to score at any time.

Travel-sick Millers face tough task

Rotherham moved five points clear of the relegation zone with their victory over Sunderland last time out, but following up on the road looks a tall order.

The Millers have taken just six points from their last ten away games, suffering a 2-1 defeat at Reading on their latest road adventure.

That came on the back of draws at Blackpool and an injury-hit Watford, while prior to that they failed to score in defeats at Millwall, West Brom and Huddersfield.

Rotherham have scored only ten goals in 17 games away from the New York Stadium but they did net twice at Burnley, as well on trips to highflying duo Sheffield United and Luton.

Matt Taylor's side tend to fare quite well against stronger opponents as they can utilise their pace on the counter-attack and that looks a good ploy as Swansea are going to dominate possession.

With that in mind, bettors may also want to consider Swansea to win and both teams to score, which is available at 13/5

It is also worth noting that both teams have scored in four of the last five Championship clashes between these sides and a repeat is a 10/11 chance.
