Australian Racing - Racing: Stats against Jack but Eustace confident

Detonator Jack will bid to provide trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace with a second successive win in the South Australian Derby on Saturday.

However, the son of Jakkalberry will need to defy recent history as he makes just his fourth career start in the 2500-metre Classic at Morphettville, for which he is currently 3/1.

The average number of starts for a Derby winner comes in at more than ten and Russian Camelot was the only horse to win with so little experience, scoring in the contest at his fifth start two years ago.

Detonator Jack scored at Bendigo on debut, before then winning at Sandown over 1600 metres and then again at Sandown over 2100 metres in his three career starts to date.

Last year's winner Explosive Jack, also by Jakkalberry, was having his eighth start when he won at Morphettville, but Eustace still believes the race is theirs to lose.

Eustace full of Jack belief

"They both took a while for the penny to drop, but Detonator Jack would probably have a bit more toe than Explosive Jack," Eustace said.

"He's versatile that way, but Explosive Jack is probably a bit tougher and got to the mark a bit quicker, but to me it's his race to lose and he seems in really good nick."
