NBA - US Sports: Sixers unsure on Embiid availability

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers has indicated star man Joel Embiid may not be able to make a return for Game 3 of their play-off series against Miami Heat.

(This article was originally published on 06.05.2022)

The Heat hold a 2-0 series lead and they are 3/1 to win the series 4-0, while the Sixers can be backed at 6/1 to win the series.

Sixers lose twice in Miami minus Embiid

Embiid missed the first two games in Miami after suffering a right orbital fracture and concussion in Philadelphia's series-clinching Game 6 win over Toronto Raptors in the previous round, and he had already been playing with a torn ligament in his right thumb.

The Sixers have struggled in his absence and the Heat have won the first two games of the series convincingly, claiming a 106-92 win in the opener and a 119-103 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Initial reports suggested Embiid may be able to make a return in Game 3, which will take place in Philadelphia on Friday, but Rivers remains unsure if the MVP candidate will be involved.

"I really don't know," said Rivers after Wednesday night's Game 2 loss, as reported by abc News. "We talked Tuesday and we talked Wednesday."

Coach Rivers has to wait and see

"He looked good, as far as talking. But he's got so many steps to go through and I don't think he's cleared any of them right now. So we just have to wait and see."

DeAndre Jordan has started both games at center for the Sixers in the absence of Embiid but Rivers may opt for a chance if the five-time All-Star remains unavailable for Game 3.

Jordan managed just four points and two rebounds in 17 minutes in the series opener, and played for 13 minutes in Game 2 - posting slightly better numbers with six points, five rebounds and one assist.
