Saturday’s Sport: No second chances in Qatar

All eyes will be on the last two World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, but there is also plenty of rugby union and horse racing action to look forward to, as well as nine Championship matches in football.

England face France after Portugal take on Morocco as the action in Qatar builds up towards next Sunday’s final.

World Cup: Classic last-eight encounter in store

What: England v France, World Cup quarter-final
Where: Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor
When: 19:00, Saturday 10th December
How to watch: ITV
Odds: England 2/1, Draw 9/4, France 7/5

Two former World Cup winners meet on Saturday evening in what looks set to be a tight and entertaining battle between two well-matched outfits.

Both teams have looked excellent at times but also have their own fallibilities with Kyle Walker’s battle with Kylian Mbappe likely to have a vital bearing on the contest.

England manager Gareth Southgate has kept faith with the likes of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire and they have responded by producing some fine displays in Qatar so far.

However, there are concerns that the players’ Manchester United form could return at a crucial time and hand Les Bleus the initiative.

World Cup: Portugal have the quality to progress

What: Morocco v Portugal, World Cup quarter-final
Where: Al Thumama Stadium, Doha
When: 15:00, Saturday 10th December 2022
How to watch: ITV1
Odds: Morocco 9/2, Draw 5/2, Portugal 7/10

A well-organised defence has been behind Morocco’s run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup and they produced the only genuine shock of the Round of 16 when they beat Spain on penalties after holding the 2010 champions to a goalless draw after extra time.

The Atlas Lions have only conceded one goal in the tournament to date - in the 2-1 victory against Canada - and that was an own goal and Walid Regragui’s team have kept seven clean sheets in their last eight games.

However, Morocco may need to be more clinical in attack if they are to get past a revitalised Portugal side that were extremely impressive in the 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Goncalo Ramos scored a sublime hat-trick against the Swiss but Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix were also superb as they took the opportunity to thrive in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Football, rugby and racing to take in

Racing from Wolverhampton has survived the weather on Saturday while the Yorkshire derby between second-placed Sheffield United and relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town is the highlight of the Championship programme. The Blades are 9/20 To Win The Match.

Meanwhile, rugby union’s Champions Cup gets underway with the added glamour of three South African sides - the Sharks, Stormers and the Bulls making their debut in the competition.

The format is a little complicated as there are two 12-team pools, with each team playing two others, home and away, and then progressing to the last 16 if they finish in the top eight of the pool.

Seven games are scheduled to be played on Saturday with the Sharks’ match against Harlequins looking particularly enticing. The Sharks are available at 4/9 To Win The Match.
