Aussie Rules: Rutten wants more from Stringer

Essendon coach Ben Rutten has said the Bombers need much more from senior player Jake Stringer after labelling his performance against Carlton on Friday night as “poor”.

The Bombers continue to struggle this season and following a 26-point loss to the Blues, they are priced at 500/1 to win the grand final.

Stringer fails to shine

Essendon have picked up just two wins from 12 games this season to sit in 16th place on the ladder. Only North Melbourne and the West Coast Eagles are below them.

Rutten says they need more from Stringer if they are to start climbing the ladder. He chipped in with just nine disposals, one mark and one behind during the loss to Carlton and Rutten was disappointed to say the least.

"He had a poor game tonight, he's a senior player for us, we need more from him. Hopefully he'll get a bounce out of that," Rutten told reporters after the game.

"I don't think [he needs more training]. His last couple of weeks, he would have played last week if we didn't have the bye, so his preparation's been fine."

Missed chances

Rutten says he was pleased with some areas of their play but again they failed to take their chances when they came along.

"I think we were ahead in our ground balls inside 50, which is an important stat generally, that's what gives you the opportunities around goal,” he added. "Execution around goal, execution around the ground, there's still some cost for us in those areas."
