Aussie Rules: Rutten cool ahead of Carlton clash

Essendon coach Ben Rutten says he is not feeling any extra pressure despite an ongoing review into the football department following a poor start to the 2022 AFL campaign.

The Bombers are priced at 21/10 to beat Carlton at the MCG on Friday night and if they can pull it off, it will be just their third win of the season.

Horror slide down the ladder

Essendon made finals last season and there were high hopes of going even deeper into them in 2022. But that is not the case.
In fact it is the complete opposite with Rutten’s men sitting in 16th after 11 games.

Only West Coast and North Melbourne are below them which has lead to a review into the football department. But Rutten is not concerned and says it is normal practice at any club that is looking to make progress.

"We're really clear on the process we're trying to embed as a footy club, where we're at as a group and where we want to get to," Rutten told reporters ahead of the Carlton game.

"That's the main thing and reviewing is part of the process of what we're doing regularly. That process is about us always striving to improve in all aspects and that won't end."

Frustrating times

Rutten also says the Bombers are doing a lot of things they are pleased with but they need to start taking the chances they are creating.

"We're not quite getting the level of execution at times to be able to get the scoreboard recognition and get a bit of that positive affirmation for what we're doing,” he added. "But there's a committed group of players, coaches and staff that are connected and aligned to what we're trying to achieve."
