Briefly the number one amateur in the world, Rory McIlroy was destined for a successful career in the professional game of golf.
He first captured the wider public's attention at the 2010 Open Championship, tying a major record as he recorded an opening 63, before a difficult Friday ruled him out of contention, eventually finishing in a tie for third.
McIlroy suffered the agony of throwing away a 63-hole lead at Augusta, not even finishing in the top 10 at the Masters the following year, before bouncing back at the next major, winning the US Open.

Born on 4th May 1989, McIlroy is 33 years old.
McIlroy was born in Holywood, Northern Ireland, but moved to Jupiter, Florida in August 2017.
McIlroy’s net worth is reported to be around £140m, with career earnings from the PGA Tour alone of around $70m with an additional $43m from his FedExCup victories.

Despite having an excellent record at Augusta, Rory McIlroy has never won the Masters. He perhaps came closest when leading by four going into the final round in 2011, retaining a reduced lead heading to the back nine, but a collapse saw McIlroy finish 10 shots off the pace.
He has, however, recorded seven top-10 finishes at the Masters in his last nine appearances, posting a Sunday record of 64 in 2022, registering his first runner-up finish at Augusta.
Fresh off the agonising collapse at the Masters, McIlroy lapped the field at Congressional just two months later, winning the US Open by eight shots.
While the 2012 Olympic closing ceremony brought an end to the London Games, McIlroy won his second major, again by eight shots with the PGA Championship.
The Northern Irishman then went back-to-back in 2014, winning The Open and a second PGA Championship, bringing his total to four.
McIlroy is married to Erica Stoll, who he first met in 2012 as part of her role with the PGA Tour. The pair wed in Northern Ireland in 2017.
McIlroy spent the first eight years of his professional career with JP Fitzgerald before splitting and working with close friend Harry Diamond, who’s been his caddy since, though McIlroy has also had friend Niall O'Connor on the bag as a stand-in.
