Aberdeen v Rangers preview: Beale out to build winning momentum

After battling to a 3-2 win over Hibernian in his first game as Rangers boss, Michael Beale will be looking for a more complete performance when his side travel to Aberdeen on Tuesday.

Rangers still find themselves nine points behind rivals Celtic in the Premiership title race but the Light Blues have the chance to narrow the gap at Pittodrie, before the Hoops host Livingston on Wednesday.

What: Aberdeen v Rangers, Scottish Premiership
Where: Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen
When: 20:00, Tuesday 20th December 2022
How to watch: Sky Sports Main Event
Odds: Aberdeen 19/4, Draw 3/1, Rangers 3/5

Challenge becoming clearer for Beale

After a roller-coaster evening against Hibs in his first game at the helm, Beale will be quickly realising the scale of the challenge ahead of him.

Rangers' defensive issues have been well documented this season and ultimately led to Giovanni van Bronckhorst losing his job at Ibrox this winter.

After impressing in the Championship with QPR, the former Glasgow Rangers assistant boss to Steven Gerrard is now back at Ibrox looking to get the Gers back on the right course.

Conceding two goals in the first 16 minutes against Hibs was far from the ideal start to Beale’s tenure, but the Englishman saw his side turn the game around in the second half.

Goals from Fashion Sakala, Ryan Jack and Alfredo Morelos in the end saw the Gers claim the spoils to get Beale off to an important winning start and stop Celtic disappearing further into the distance.

Inconsistency the curse for Dons

Aberdeen have shown some promising signs this season but their inconsistency means that third place in the table is likely the best the Dons can hope for this term.

The Reds' form in their last six Premiership games reads WLWLWL. That trend would suggest they are due a win over Rangers on Tuesday but unfortunately for Dons manager Jim Goodwin, it's unlikely to be as easy as that.

Aberdeen travelled to Ibrox to face Rangers at the end of October but headed back north with nothing after a 4-1 defeat in Glasgow.

The Dons did take the lead in that game in the 21st minute thanks to Connor Barron, but Rangers responded well with goals from Antonio Colak, John Lundstram, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos.

Having been turned over at Ibrox, it’s little surprise to see Aberdeen as the underdogs at 19/4 to win on home soil on Tuesday.

The Dons will head into this encounter on the back of a frustrating narrow defeat at the hands of Celtic.

It looked like Goodwin's charges were going to scrap out a goalless draw, before Scotland midfielder Callum McGregor bagged a winner in the 87th minute at Pittodrie. A result that means Aberdeen sit in third place in the table with a one-point lead over Hearts.

Rangers record impressive

When it comes to encounters between these sides, Rangers have been the dominant force in recent years.

Unbeaten in their last 13 league meetings, the Light Blues' last Premiership defeat against Aberdeen came back in December 2018.

Rangers are 3/5 Full Time Result to claim all three points on Tuesday night, while the draw on the east coast is available at 3/1.

Aberdeen adopted a deep defensive block in their last outing against Celtic in a bid to frustrate the Premiership frontrunners.

It almost worked, before McGregor popped up with a strike from 20 yards out in the dying stages.

With Goodwin's Aberdeen likely to play deep against Rangers once again on Tuesday night, goals might well be at a premium in this one.

In the Goals Over/Under market, Under 2.5 is available at 11/10 and is certainly worth considering.

Both Teams To Score would have landed in six of Rangers' last seven outings in the Premiership and both sides to find the back of the net is 3/4 at Pittodrie.
