Australian Football: Phoenix target striker swoop

Wellington Phoenix boss Ufuk Talay has suggested a new striker is at the top of his wanted list as he turns his focus to next season following the elimination final defeat to Western United.

The Nix saw their finals campaign come to an end at the first hurdle as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Western United on Saturday night.

Talay looking ahead

Talay was proud of the effort that his players put in throughout the season and now it is the coach’s job to build a bigger and better squad for next season.

One or two players are expected to move on elsewhere and Talay also has players he wants to bring in so it looks like being a busy off-season. With a new striker top of his list.

"We've got a few important positions that we need to fill with visa spots. At the moment we're looking at a few players," Talay told reporters. "For me, it's no rush with the visa players. Visa players are important in the sense that they need to add value to the team.

"They need to have a point of difference. We've got 14, 15 players signed at the moment and we'll continue to build.

"To get to the next level for us, it's consistency with the players. We lacked probably a goalscorer this season. We shared the goals around with a few players but we lacked a real clinical player up front and that's something we're looking for."

Returning home

Meanwhile the Nix are also looking forward to returning to New Zealand after being based in Australia for the last two seasons.

"It's nice to know that we're going to be back and have a bit of normality,” Talay added.
