Australian Football: Patched-up Nix to face Jets

Wellington Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay admits he will have to send out a patched-up side when they take on the Newcastle Jets on Friday night.

The Nix are out to finish in the top six but Talay has lost a number of key players for the clash at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Key men missing

Wellington have been rocked by the news that captain Alex Rufer is out for the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury but it is not the only issue for Talay.

English forward David Ball picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the loss to Brisbane Roar last weekend and is suspended, while Reno Piscopo and Oskar van Hattum are injured.

Just to add to the selection woes Oli Sail, Ben Old, Ben Waine and Clayton Lewis are all on international duty with New Zealand for the their World Cup qualifiers.

Talay admits the situation is far from ideal but he has still managed to scrape a squad together and has every faith in the players available to him.

Chance to shine

"I think we've got just the right amount of players to make the squad this week," Talay told reporters ahead of the game. "We'll go with the numbers that we have.

"We've got some young boys here that haven't had game time and this is an opportunity to show what they can actually do and go out there and perform.

"We'll have to adapt some players into different roles. It might not be something they're accustomed to but I think they're good enough to adapt."
