Australian Football: Nix star playing through the pain

Wellington Phoenix forward David Ball is playing through the pain barrier as he looks to help his side push for silverware in the A-League campaign.

The Nix sit in sixth spot on the ladder and are priced at 2/5 to stay there and play finals football once the regular season is over.

Injured toe

Ball is currently playing on with an injured toe that is preventing him from training throughout the week, while he also has to wear a moon boot.

However he is still managing to get out on the pitch despite knowing he could be out for months if it gets worse.

Victory on a high after Bulls wins

"I've been getting their local anaesthetic into my big toe, which wears off about 60 minutes in. I'm straining to do (anything) after that," he told  AAP.. "But it can actually get worse. It can fully tear which would mean three to four months (out) and surgery," he said.

"There is a lot of risk in there of actually making it a lot worse but I'm just one of these lads that it's all or nothing. I spoke with the manager and he felt like he needed me and the lads need me so I'm doing my best to be there with the team.”

Wanderers response

Wellington suffered a 4-0 home defeat against the Central Coast Mariners last week and return to action against Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday,

Ball says they need to respond as the race to finish in finals hots up, and he expects to get one.

"The vibe's good. It's been one of them seasons where we've won two and lost one, it's not all doom and gloom," he added.
