New Year's Day Sport: All you need to know

The first day of 2023 will see a lot of top-quality sporting action take place, including two Premier League games, quarter-final ties in the PDC World Darts Championship, plenty of horse racing and a bumper day in the NFL.

What sport is on New Year's Day?

While there are just two Premier League games on 1st January, it's a busy day of domestic football action in England with matches taking place in the Championship and also in Leagues 1 and 2.

All four quarter-finals in the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace are due to take place on New Year's Day, there are six UK horse racing meetings scheduled and no less than 13 NFL games to keep an eye on.

In cricket, The Big Bash League will be ongoing in Australia on the first day of 2023, while there is one game in the Premiership in rugby union.

Tottenham host Aston Villa at 14:00 in the Premier League, before Nottingham Forest and Chelsea meet at the City Ground at 16:30.

There are jumps meetings at Cheltenham, Exeter, Musselburgh, Fakenham and Catterick, while they go over the flat on the all-weather track at Southwell.

Among the highlights on a seven-race card from Cheltenham are The Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at 12:10, The Dipper Novices’ Steeple Chase at 13:20 and the Relkeel Hurdle at 15:05.

In Ireland there's also National Hunt action at Fairyhouse and the other Irish meeting on New Year's Day comes from Tramore.

What other New Year's Day sports events are on?

The PDC World Darts Championship will be at the quarter-final stage on the first day of the new year with all four last-eight ties set to take place.

Defending champion Peter Wright, is already out having been eliminated in the third round, while the likes of Michael van Gerwen, who is 13/8 To Win Outright, and 4/1 Gerwyn Price could also be in action.

The last time the final was on New Year's Day was back in 2020 when Wright beat Van Gerwen 7-3 to take the title.

It's a busy day of NFL action in the US with 13 games in total taking place, including the New England Patriots against Miami Dolphins at 18:00 and Las Vegas Raiders versus the San Francisco 49ers at 21:05.

The Dolphins are 50/1 To Win Outright in the Super Bowl LVII market, while the 49ers are 6/1.

In rugby union, there is one game on New Year's Day in the Gallagher Premiership when Northampton Saints entertain Harlequins at 15:00.

In cricket, there are two games in Australia's Big Bash League, with the Melbourne Renegades hosting the Perth Scorchers at 02:40 and Brisbane Heat taking on the Sydney Sixers at 08:15.

Yes, there is plenty of sport on TV to keep fans happy as 2023 begins.

Both the Premier League games on New Year's Day are live on Sky Sports Main Event & Football and the Championship game between Blackburn and Cardiff is also live on Sky Sports Football.

Sky Sports will also be showing the New Year's Day darts action from Alexandra Palace on their Main Event channel and the horse racing will feature on Racing TV and Sky Sports Racing.
