Natasha Jonas set for Liverpool homecoming in epic world title unification dust-up next month.
WBO super-welterweight champion Natasha Jonas (11-2-1, 8 KOs) has been added to BOXXER’s stacked Liam Smith (31-3-1, 18 KOs) vs Hassan Mwakinyo (20-2, 14 KOs) card in Liverpool on September 3.
The 2012 Olympian will return to her beloved home city for the first time in three years, bidding to unify the 154lb division against the hugely talented and unbeaten Swedish WBC strap holder Patricia Berghult (15-0, 3 KOs).
The fight will provide Jonas with arguably the toughest test of her career, whilst also igniting a monumental month of women’s boxing for BOXXER – which includes the long-awaited Claressa Shields (12-0, 2 KOs) vs Savannah Marshall (12-0, 10 KOs) undisputed bout.
Announcing the addition of the fight to an already impressive bill of action, BOXXER founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “Tasha is one of British boxing’s trailblazers!
“She was our first world champion signing at BOXXER and she fully deserves this great opportunity on home soil.
“It is a great fight against the WBC champion Berghult, who is unbeaten and will be looking to upset the home fans.
“Tasha is a hugely popular figure on Merseyside and she will be backed by thousands on the night.”
He added: “The atmosphere will be electric – and just what Tasha needs as she bids to become the unified world champion.”
Jonas vs Berghult will offer chief support to ‘Beefy’ Smith’s headline showdown against Tanzanian super-welterweight Mwakinyo, whilst the card is also bolstered by the additions of unbeaten light-heavyweight Dan Azeez (16-0, 11 KOs) and super-lightweight prospect Adam Azim (5-0, 4 KOs).
Tickets for the event are now on sale, and start from £40. Head to Boxxer.com for more details.
