Queensland coach Billy Slater has confirmed fellow Maroons legends Cameron Smith and Jonathan Thurston have been added to his staff for State of Origin in 2022.
Queensland are determined to win the Origin series and now have a new four-pronged coaching attack to take on New South Wales.
Slater has also confirmed that Josh Hannay will stay on as an assistant coach as the Maroons look to bounce back from a 2-1 series defeat in 2021.
The announcement is sure to excite the Queensland faithful who will be delighted to have so many legends united for one common goal.
Smith and Thurtson have 79 Origin appearances between them. Smith is the all-time leading appearance maker having figured in 42 Origin battles.
Slater is in absolute no doubt that the former Melbourne Storm ace will be a valuable addition to his coaching ranks.
“If you look at what he brought as a player and a leader, I think that’s also what he can bring as a member of the coaching staff,” Slater said of Smith. “Some people have this aura about them, and Cameron Smith is one of those people.
“He didn’t have to say a lot as captain of the Queensland State of Origin team, you felt it more than anything … you felt his presence.”
Thurston is also an Origin record-holder when scoring 220 points and again Slater is delighted to have him on board.
“I just think he’s a valuable asset, not just with the coaching staff, but the players in particular,” Slater added.
