La Liga weekend preview: Real Madrid should be wary of red-hot Real Sociedad

It has been a busy couple of weeks in Spain with the Spanish Super Cup taking centre stage earlier in the month, while the Copa del Rey reached the quarter-final stage this week, but attention turns back to La Liga this weekend.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Real Betis are among those in action in the more eye-catching games on Saturday and Sunday and here is a look at how those matches could unfold.

Barcelona sit top of La Liga, three points clear of Real Madrid, going into this weekend's batch of matches but that has not stopped manager Xavi bemoaning his side's lack of ruthlessness in the final third following Wednesday's 1-0 win over Real Sociedad.

The Catalan giants are going well in the league, are through to the last four of the Copa del Rey and have the Europa League knockout stages to look forward to but they have sometimes been lacking going forwards.

Their cup triumph over La Real was their sixth competitive 1-0 win this season and goals could be at a premium again when they visit Girona on Saturday.

Barcelona go into this one again missing key forwards Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, who are both suspended, and that will limit their threat up top.

They will be eager to keep the pressure on Real Madrid, knowing their opponents face a tough fixture with Real Sociedad this weekend, but punters should not expect a barnstorming performance and a Barcelona win and under 2.5 goals could instead be the value approach at 10/3.

Sunday's 1-0 loss to Barcelona means Getafe have started 2023 with four straight defeats in all competitions and that run could be extended to five by Real Betis.

Getafe's clash with Barca was not an easy watch, with neither side offering much going forwards and the capital club have been particularly poor in front of goal, scoring only 16 times in 18 league assignments this season.

Since 2004, Getafe have only been out of La Liga for one season but they are most definitely in the relegation mix and Quique Sanchez Flores, in his third stint at the club, has work to do.

The absences of Munir and Mauro Arambarri are not helping matters and they are worth opposing against Betis, who are in the hunt for the Champions League places.

Betis slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Espanyol last time out but were unlucky, having controlled the contest with 70 percent of the ball and winning the shot count 13-8.

Getafe have won only two league games at home this season and Betis look a decent bet to win this at 13/8.

Without doubt, the highlight of this weekend's La Liga action comes at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday when Real Madrid face Real Sociedad.

Los Blancos trail El Clasico rivals Barcelona by three points in the La Liga title race coming into this weekend and know a win is a must if they are to keep pace.

But Real Sociedad have looked superb since returning from the World Cup break, winning seven straight matches in all competitions before their Copa del Rey exit at the hands of Barcelona last time out.

The return of Mikel Oyarzabal to the team has been a big plus as has the form of striker Alexander Sorloth, who has scored eight goals in 14 league matches this season.

With Real Madrid facing rivals Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on Thursday night, Real Sociedad will have an extra day of rest under their belts and they could get a result from this fixture.

Real Sociedad have one of the best away records in La Liga this season with seven wins picked up from nine road league games and a Real Sociedad win or draw is worth considering in the double chance market at 11/10.
