Australian Football: Kuol strike sinks Western

Central Coast Mariners boosted their top six hopes and put a dent in Western United’s minor premiership chances with a 1-0 win in Gosford on Saturday night.

The Mariners are priced at 1/25 to finish in the top six and the win keeps them in fifth spot, four points clear of Macarthur in seventh with just two games of the regular season remaining.

Kuol the hero

Garang Kuol was the hero for the Mariners when firing home a cool finish in the 81st minute of the game.

The 17-year-old is the brother of former Mariners star Alou Kuol, who bagged a brace against Western United last year to wrap up a 3-2 win. Now it was his turn to seal the win which he did with a touch of class.

Victory keep pressure on at the top

"It was fitting he did that tonight," Mariners coach Nick Montgomery told reporters after the game. "When he came on I said to him, 'Your brother did the same thing against Western, he came off the bench and scored two goals to win the game'.

"The kid is lethal in and around the box. He only needs one chance. He showed the older boys how to do it, because we had a lot of chances tonight and couldn't quite capitalise."

Western disappointment

Western now sit in third place on the ladder and their chances of winning the premiers plate are hanging by a thread with Melbourne City two points clear at the top.

"I thought we struggled from start to finish physically. We just looked heavy, and that's normally not like us," coach John Aloisi said after the game.
