Morgan to get overdue big day

The Grade 2 December Novices' Chase is an unusually big field for a race of its type and probably owes part of that to there being no standout performer.

In fact, none of the eight runners has recorded a Racing Post Rating higher than 128 over fences.

Jet Plane is the one who has got that high, and he will climb higher, but I don't believe he should be half the price of Loughderg Rocco.

This horse easily beat Tim Pat (rated 125 now) in a point-to-point and made a great start over fences when running the high-class Gelino Bello to half a length at Wetherby six weeks ago.

Trainer Laura Morgan has booked champion jockey Brian Hughes for the ride and it is only a matter of time before she bags a big winner.

She will not get many better opportunities, and this horse could be one of the stars of her yard this season.

Lee to Storm Doncaster

Storm Control is in two races on Saturday, the 2.05 at Doncaster and the December Gold Cup, although his nominated first preference is this race so expect him to turn up here.

He has form at Cheltenham, including a run in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last time that was more promising than a 16-length eighth of 14 would imply.

But he also has strong form here, in fact he was the moral winner of the biggest race held over this course and distance: the Great Yorkshire Chase in January.

That day Storm Control idled badly in front, which can be his way. He was off a 5lb higher mark then and this is a much weaker race, so clearly he is well handicapped and his current form is better than bare form figures (PP358 since January) would have it.

Storm Control has new headgear (visor) on here, so expect Richard Patrick to light him up. It is often the case that the leaders don't come back over fences at Doncaster.

Get in on the Luv in

Catterick is not a particularly fashionable track, which is a shame because the chase course takes quite a bit of jumping and tests horses in their ability to quicken.

I reckon had Getaway Luv's win last time been at a fancier track, a Haydock or a Doncaster, he would be a much shorter price for this and as a result he offers value at current odds.

There was substance to his win at Catterick, too. The horse that shaped second best before getting tired, Masked Crusader, unseated at the last when set to win at Musselburgh on Monday.

Getaway Luv remains with some room to improve on his form in the spring for a different yard and he looks to have conditions to suit here.

His most recent run strikes me as a more compelling one than that of the two favourites, Heroique De Maulde and Maninsane.
