Premier League - Football: James Milton's antepost tips part two

Original article published 17 October 2022

The 2022/23 Premier League kicks off on Friday 5th August and in his second antepost preview article, Racing Post football expert James Milton shares his best bets for this season's Premier League player markets.

Amidst his lastest predictions, James has given us his thoughts on the race to be the top goalscorer, who will provide the most assists and which of the Premier League's stars will be named as the PFA Player of the year.

What:Premier League 2022/23
Where:England
When:

6th August 2022 - 28th May 2023

How to watch:

Selected matches on Sky Sports and BT Sport

Odds:Man City 8/13, Liverpool 5/2, Tottenham 12/1, Chelsea 16/1, Man Utd 28/1

Top Goalscorer: Super Salah still the man to beat

All eyes are on Erling Braut Haaland in the Top Goalscorer market and the Manchester City new boy is 3/1 to win the Golden Boot in his first season in English football.

Haaland is a thrilling signing for the champions but newcomers to the Premier League have a poor record in this market and it could pay to stick with the dependable Mohamed Salah at 9/2.

The Liverpool man was not at his best last season but still ended up as joint-top scorer, sharing the Boot with fast-finishing Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son. Salah, like Haaland, should benefit from a break during the World Cup.

The Egyptian has hit 32, 22, 19, 22 and 23 goals in five seasons at Anfield while injuries restricted Haaland to just 21 league starts for Borussia Dortmund last term so Pep Guardiola will be keen to manage his young star's workload in his first Premier League campaign.

Harry Kane at 6/1 and Son at 12/1 may well share the goals around at Tottenham again. Further down the betting,  Raheem Sterling at 33/1 could be rejuvenated by his move to Chelsea and 50/1 Bruno Fernandes, a prolific scorer before Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United, would be an each-way contender if he rediscovers his best form.

Goalscorer Match Bets: Zaha thriving under Palace boss

Wilfried Zaha was one of several Crystal Palace players who flourished in Patrick Vieira's first season in charge and the Ivorian international is worth backing at 4/6 in a Goalscorer Match Bet with 11/10 Philippe Coutinho of Aston Villa.

Zaha scored 14 league goals last term, the best return of his career. He is central to Palace's attacking gameplan and, unlike Coutinho, is also a regular penalty-taker for his club.

Manchester United's Fernandes will be keen to get back on spot-kick duty, for if his compatriot Ronaldo is not part of Erik ten Hag's plans, Fernandes is a tempting bet at 5/6 to outscore Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne.

The Portugal ace scored 29 in 52 Premier League starts before Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford cramped his style and, while De Bruyne struck 15 times in the league in 2021/22, he had reached double figures only once in his previous six seasons at City.

The third leg of the Goalscorer Match Bet treble is Leicester's James Maddison at 11/10 to beat Mason Mount of Chelsea. Maddison won this match-up 12-11 in 2021/22 despite an injury-disrupted campaign and he also scored four times during the Foxes' European run.

Player Total Goals: Haaland may fall short of 30-goal mark

Haaland's arrival at Manchester City is one of the most intriguing aspects of the new season and opposing defenders will be well aware of the striker's phenomenal goalscoring record for Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Norway.

There are a few caveats for punters tempted by the 15/4 that he reaches 30 goals in his first Premier League campaign as traditional strikers have not always fitted in seamlessly to Guardiola-coached teams.

Haaland was hampered by injuries in his final season at Dortmund although he still rattled in 22 goals in 21 Bundesliga starts and given the creative talent in the City squad the 5/4 about him scoring 25 or more league goals looks a solid bet.

Most Assists: Classy Kane can show creative talent

De Bruyne is 9/2 to claim Most Assists in the 2022/23 Premier League but the Manchester City playmaker has plenty of rivals for the creative crown.

Tottenham star Kane's remarkable goalscoring feats can overshadow his ability to bring teammates into play but he merits an each-way bet at 16/1.

His understanding with fellow Spurs forward Son is extraordinary and he ended last term with nine assists, one more than De Bruyne, having racked up a league-high 14 in 2020/21.

Another north London-based forward who could make the frame in this market is Arsenal's Bukayo Saka at 33/1. The England youngster had seven assists last season and he may well improve on that tally if the Gunners' new centre-forward Gabriel Jesus continues his impressive pre-season form.

PFA Player of the Year: City stars should shine again

Despite opposing De Bruyne in a couple of other individual markets, he looks the standout bet at 8/1 to win PFA Player of the Year for the third time in four seasons.

The Belgian's main market rivals Haaland and Salah are expected to prosper in front of goal but City's De Bruyne remains the most complete footballer in the Premier League and his performances over the past three years have been outstanding.

Punters looking for an outsider in this market could do worse than the 100/1 about De Bruyne's teammate Rodri, who was terrific for the champions in 2021/22, starting 33 of their 38 league games, scoring seven goals and winning back possession more than any other player in the division.

Attacking players tend to dominate this award but the last six winners include N'Golo Kante and Virgil van Dijk so Rodri, who only turned 26 in June, is worth a small bet at a big price.

Golden Glove: Mendy poses threat to Brazilian aces

Brilliant Brazilian goalkeepers Alisson and Ederson shared the Golden Glove last season, each keeping 20 Premier League clean sheets, and they understandably dominate the market again.

Manchester City's Ederson, who scooped the award in 2019/20 and 2020/21 and is 1/1 for most shutouts, with Liverpool's Alisson at 7/4 but Chelsea's Edouard Mendy could be a threat to the front two at 8/1.

Mendy equalled the record for the most clean sheets in a Champions League season in his first campaign for the Blues in 2020/21 and recorded 14 shutouts in 34 league starts last term.

He helped Senegal win this year's Africa Cup of Nations, conceding just twice in seven games, and the arrival of centre-back, and international teammate, Kalidou Koulibaly should enable Chelsea to maintain their excellent defensive standards under Thomas Tuchel.
