Ayr’s Listed Rothesay Stakes is an excellent opportunity for AL HUSN to pick up a first victory of the season for Roger Varian.
Al Husn was deeply progressive at three and climbed from a mark of 82 to 100 after winning a handicap at Kempton and two at Newmarket in the autumn.
Thrown into the soft-ground Group 2 Dahlia Stakes on her return, Al Husn ran another career-best when second and ahead of some good fillies, such as Group 1 winner Prosperous Voyage and race-fit mud-lover Astral Beau.
That was Al Husn’s first attempt at soft ground and she didn’t look all at sea on that terrain, but we know she is fine on a quicker surface and gives the impression she will be best over middle distances this campaign.
She gets another furlong here and Jim Crowley arrives at Ayr for just the one ride, so that looks a tip in itself, while Roger Varian’s record at Ayr is impressive.
The Newmarket trainer is operating at a 32 per cent strike-rate there and backing each of his 31 runners at that the Scottish track to £1 stakes would have yielded a tidy £12.84 profit.

I love a staying race and TESTING FAITH looks a good bet to land the 1m6f handicap at Yarmouth.
Trainer Ian Williams excels in this division and Testing Faith shaped well from an unpromising position when staying on into fourth at Southwell over 2m last time.
That was a slowly run race and he did well to finish as close as he did given his track position.
The fact Williams has booked the services of champion jockey William Buick is eye-catching and this son of Time Test has been dropped another 1lb in the weights by the assessor.
Still unexposed after 13 career starts (just two at staying trips), Testing Faith looks well capable of notching a first career success off a lowly rating of 55, particularly as he has recorded RPRs in the low 70s in the past.

It has been some fall from grace for MUKER, who contests the Class 5 5f handicap at Ayr.
Muker reached a high level as a juvenile for former trainer Phillip Makin, placing in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot on just his second start.
However, his BHA mark has fallen from 103 to 68 in the last two seasons. Paul Midgley couldn’t coerce a victory out of Muker after he left Makin and now he is with Nigel Tinkler.
Muker again ran poorly on his stable debut in April, but was entitled to need it after 184 days off and the soft ground and 6f trip wouldn’t have suited.
He produced a much better effort dropped back to 5f on a quicker surface at Pontefract this month, only beaten four lengths into sixth after meeting with trouble in running inside the final furlong.
This is his third outing for Tinkler and the handicapper has eased him another 2lb, so it is unlikely he’ll ever find a better chance to bounce back to form with plenty in his favour under 7lb claimer Alex Jary.
