Lovejoy can live up to smart pedigree

His Majesty’s Cup Rated Race (3.05) over 5f at Bellewstown is a classy sprint with lots of unexposed three-year-olds bringing fair form to the table. 

I was initially drawn to Polar Bear on his seasonal return for Jessica Harrington, who has been responsible for a couple of first out winners since the start of the campaign, but he probably needs 6f to be seen to best effect and one to back is the Willie McCreery-trained Lovejoy. 

McCreery knows the family well as he also handled the career of Lovejoy’s half-sister Loveday, who has placed in three 5f Listed races and earned her highest Racing Post Rating (99) on heavy ground last November. 

The twice-raced Lovejoy defied inexperience to make every yard on her debut in a 17-runner soft-ground 5½f maiden at Navan last October, clinging on for a narrow success from a well-fancied 85-rated performer from the Harrington yard. 

Lovejoy flopped when well backed to make a winning handicap debut dropped to 5f off 83 just 16 days later at Dundalk but, in hindsight, her seventh-placed finish is well worth forgiving. 

She was lugging top weight against more experienced rivals and drawn widest of all which cost her any chance of gaining the lead. 

There is every chance the run came too soon as well and, given she was able to score first time up last term, she looks well worth chancing under Billy Lee with ground conditions to suit off a 3lb lower rating.

Kingmania to strike on stable debut

Kingmania is a fascinating recruit for James Ferguson and can make the perfect start to life with her new trainer in the mile handicap at Southwell (6.30). 

Formerly with the now retired Chris Wall, Kingmania began her previous season rated 8lb higher and ended it with an eye-catching fifth at Newmarket over 7f behind subsequent easy Listed winner Astral Beau. 

This five-year-old was given too much to do that day and suffered plenty of trouble in the run, so off 2lb lower simply has to be considered given the top form of the Ferguson stable. 

The trainer has saddled three winners and a second from his last six runners and Kingmania is unexposed over this mile distance. 

There are clues in her pedigree that she should relish the trip and a first crack at the all-weather, and a first-time hood might make the difference.

Kiss My Face vulnerable to Huscari

The eye is naturally drawn to hat-trick-seeker Kiss My Face in the staying handicap that concludes Southwell’s card (8.30). 

However, short-priced favourite backers must be aware of the live danger that is Huscari, who is improving and could represent some value against the market leader. 

The lightly raced Jamie Osborne-trained four-year-old needed her return from 450 days off on her handicap debut at Lingfield in January, but hasn’t looked back since upped to 2m, shedding her maiden tag back at that venue last month. 

That was a slowly run race and she got the verdict in a bunched finish, but she is only up 2lb in the weights and wouldn’t have been ideally suited by the way the race was run. 

Huscari remains completely unexposed as a stayer and appeals as the type to take to Southwell’s surface given her US dirt pedigree.
